But in a fine fragrance meant to be sprayed on the body, the preferred alcohol base is properly purified cosmetic / perfumery-grade ethanol—not methanol.</p><p><strong>Methanol</strong> becomes a red flag when it appears because it’s a cheaper substitute, it is in contaminated alcohol supply, weak quality control of makers / manufacturers, and last but the most apparent in cottage businesses—ignorance of safety standards.</p><div><br/></div><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1776864923709Methanol.jpg" style="width:700px" class="fr-fic fr-dib fr-rounded"/></div><div><br/></div><p>When does it become dangerous? It becomes dangerous the moment a brand treats safety as an afterthought and toxicology like a technicality. These brands do not realize that using methanol-tainted alcohol (or using methanol itself) means they themselves and their customers are exposed to this harmful ingredient.</p><p>[In] my perspective and experience, <strong>if a brand cannot confidently explain its alcohol source, their raw materials selection and quality controls, that increase itself is a problem. </strong>For businesses distributing products of brands, if their brand principals cannot explain these things either, then that should also be something to be wary of.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>MS: What should we be looking for to ensure the alcohol base is high-grade and properly purified rather than industrial-grade?</strong></div><p><strong>BL:</strong> Consumers shouldn’t need a chemistry lab to shop safely because that’s a responsibility that belongs to the brand. But here are the signs of a serious operator:<strong></strong></p><div><strong>Green Flags:</strong></div><ul style="list-style-type:circle"><li>Clear manufacturer or distributor identity</li><li>Proper labeling</li><li>Batch traceability</li><li>Stable product appearance over time</li><li>Willingness to answer sourcing and safety questions professionally</li><li>Consistency across batches</li><li>Knowledge of regulatory obligations</li></ul><div><br/></div><div><strong>Red Flags:</strong></div><ul style="list-style-type:circle"><li>“Trade secret” used to dodge basic safety questions</li><li>Suspiciously cheap pricing with premium claims</li><li>Inconsistent smell from batch to batch</li><li>Cloudy or unstable liquid without explanation</li><li>No address, no business footprint, no accountability</li><li>Aggressive defensiveness when asked normal questions</li></ul><div><br/></div><p>My rule: If a brand can’t properly identify, explain, and trace the products they’re selling, that’s a red flag.</p><div><br/></div><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1776865132069Safe Perfumes.jpg" style="width:700px" class="fr-fic fr-dib fr-rounded"/></div><div><br/></div><div><strong>MS: With the rise of third-party resellers and dupe culture, how much risk are consumers taking when they buy outside of authorized boutiques? Are these the primary places where methanol contamination occurs?</strong></div><p><strong>BL:</strong> I have to be fair and honest in answering this question. This is quite a wide spectrum because not every reseller is unsafe and not every dupe [is] made recklessly. There are truly honest and proper fragrance makers, but there are also some who make solely for profit without regard for consumer safety. But buying outside authorized channels increases uncertainty because you won’t get the quality controls and assurance of the original brands you’re buying. Some can even be fakes.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>MS: Are budget alternatives more prone to unsafe solvents?</strong></div><p><strong>BL: </strong>Cheap does not equal unsafe. But when margins are razor-thin, regulatory compliance isn’t a priority, and transparency is absent, corners are easier to cut. From what happened recently in the industry, it’s in this segment where there are higher incidences of methanol tainting that [have] occurred simply because they haven’t been regulatory compliant.</p><p>Brands that are established and businesses that are duly registered would be less exposed to these kinds of issues because of the quality controls in place that are required alongside remaining compliant. The same goes with Class A copies of perfumes—who knows what is being put in those bottles? It sets standards and usage limits for certain aroma ingredients based on safety data, such as irritation, sensitization, and exposure levels. In simpler terms, IFRA looks at what goes into the scent concentrate and not the entire finished perfume formula.</p><p>That said, IFRA does not automatically cover or certify the alcohol base (its purity or contamination issues), other raw materials used in creating the finished product, manufacturing practices, etc.</p><p>The broader responsibility usually falls under the local regulatory authority (such as the <strong>FDA</strong> in the Philippines), which looks at the finished cosmetic product for overall compliance based on local laws and requirements.</p><p>So overall, IFRA compliance is a good sign—but it is only one part of the safety picture.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>MS: Can you share some common misconceptions on synthetics and naturals? Which one is really safer?</strong></div><p><strong>BL:</strong> Let’s simplify one of the biggest myths in fragrance: Natural does not automatically mean safer. Synthetic does not automatically mean harmful. Those labels describe where a material comes from, not how safe it is.</p><p>Natural materials such as essential oils, absolutes, and plant extracts can still contain allergens, sensitizers, or unstable components that change over time. Something being derived from nature does not guarantee that every skin type will tolerate it well.</p><p>On the other hand, synthetic materials are often misunderstood. Many are used because they offer greater consistency, stability, and precision in formulation. What matters more is whether it is appropriate for the formula, responsibly dosed, and supported by good manufacturing and regulatory compliance. </p><p>So if consumers are asking which is safer, the honest answer is neither category by default. The safer fragrance is the one that is intelligently formulated, properly tested, and made by a responsible brand.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>MS: What are immediate red flags a consumer should look for when testing a new brand? Are there specific certifications or “vibe checks” a house must pass? Any indications on a fragrance’s packaging that might suggest the formula is unsafe?</strong></div><p><strong>BL: </strong>When trying a new fragrance brand, consumers should look at the overall professionalism of both the product and the people behind it. Safety issues do not always appear dramatically, so the best clues are often found in how seriously a brand handles the basics.</p><p>Transparency is one of the most important indicators. A trustworthy brand—whether it is a large company, an artisan house, or a home-based business—should be able to clearly state who makes the product, where it is produced, and who is responsible for selling it. Size is not the issue. Accountability is.</p><p>Packaging can also reveal a lot about standards. Clean labeling, proper sealing, ingredient declarations where required, batch or traceability details where applicable, and clear contact information are all positive signs. On the other hand, leaking bottles, damaged seals, missing labels, inconsistent presentation, or incomplete information may suggest weak quality control. A serious fragrance house does not need to be huge or corporate-looking. Some excellent brands start from small studios or home workshops. What matters is whether they communicate clearly, answer questions respectfully, understand their materials, and show consistency in how they operate.</p><p>My overall advice is simple: <strong>do not judge a brand by size or aesthetics alone. Judge it by transparency, care, consistency, and responsibility. In fragrance, trust is built through standards, not square footage.</strong></p><div><br/></div><div><strong>MS: For the health-conscious consumer who still loves fragrance, are there ways to mitigate risk through application? (For example, does scenting your clothes rather than your pulse points significantly reduce chemical absorption?)</strong></div><p><strong>BL:</strong> Yes, there are practical ways to enjoy fragrance more mindfully, especially for consumers who are sensitive or simply prefer to minimize exposure. Application habits can make a meaningful difference, although they do not replace the importance of buying from reputable brands with safe formulations.</p><p>Spraying fragrance on clothing instead of directly onto pulse points can reduce direct skin contact, which may be helpful for those prone to irritation or sensitivity. It can lessen dermal absorption because the fragrance is sitting on fabric rather than being applied straight to the skin.
