<p>It starts with something small—an extra serum, a saved TikTok, a “maybe I should try that” moment while scrolling late at night. Then one day, you catch yourself looking in the mirror a little longer than usual, not to get ready, but to check. To assess. To fix.</p><p>There’s a word for this now, at least online: <strong>looksmaxxing</strong>. A kind of umbrella term for <strong>optimizing your appearance to its highest possible version</strong>—skin, face, body, everything. It used to live in obscure corners of the internet. Now it’s everywhere, just dressed differently. In glow-up reels. In “realistic” routines that are anything but. Social media just makes it easier to see it all at once. Your routine isn’t just your routine anymore. It’s something you compare, measure, and silently rank against everyone else’s.</p><p>In the Philippines, where beauty has always come with its own set of expectations—lighter skin, softer features, thinner body, a certain kind of “polished”—this adds another layer. Even enhancements, done safely and thoughtfully, can be part of how someone chooses to care for themselves.</p><p>But looksmaxxing has a way of <em>reframing those choices.</em></p><p>You start noticing how often the language shifts. From<em> I want to try this to I should fix this. </em>From <em>I feel good to this could still be better.</em></p><p>It’s subtle. Add a constant stream of ideal faces and “before and afters,” and it becomes harder to tell where self-expression ends and pressure begins.</p><p><a href="https://www.unicef.org/parenting/mental-health/teens-body-image" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">UNICEF has flagged this too</a>, noting how image-heavy platforms <strong>can make it difficult for teens to appreciate their own bodies when they’re constantly seeing perfected versions of someone else’s.</strong></p><div><br/></div><div><strong>When Beauty Advice Stops Being Harmless</strong></div><p>There’s also a more practical layer to this, especially locally.</p><p>Aesthetic treatments are more accessible than ever in the Philippines. Clinics are everywhere. Recommendations travel fast. But not all advice online is harmless, and not all providers are qualified.</p><p>The <a href="https://pds.org.ph/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Philippine Dermatological Society</a> has warned against injectables like fillers and toxins being administered by non-doctors, pointing out that these are medical procedures, not casual add-ons. It’s the kind of reminder that tends to get drowned out by viral results and glowing reviews.</p><p>Because online, everything looks easy. Quick. Worth it. In real life, it isn’t always.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>The Part We Don’t Talk About Enough</strong></div><p>What makes looksmaxxing complicated isn’t just the routines or the treatments. It’s what it does to <strong>how you see yourself.</strong></p><p>There’s <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5986110/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">research</a> showing that <strong>people who pursue repeated cosmetic procedures may also experience higher levels of body image distress, including body dysmorphic tendencies.</strong> Not everyone, of course. But enough to raise questions about where the desire is coming from, and whether anything will actually feel like enough once you start.</p><p>That’s the silent risk.
