Hair Style and Color Trends to Watch Out for in 2022
New year, new you! Welcome the new year with a fresh new look to match.
The coming year is looking to be quite the interesting one for the salon industry. With alert levels staying low, restrictions have been continuing to ease up, allowing us the liberty to set fairly regular appointments with our hairstylists. I remember being so happy to book a haircut and color in the latter portion of 2020, eager to get rid of my mermaid-length locks and to switch out a burgundy balayage that had seen better days for a color that was easier to maintain.
So many of us have been coming in to go back to our pre-pandemic looks or to try out completely new styles. And because the opportunity to celebrate and gather—albeit safely—has returned in some capacity, some of us are more than ready to welcome the new year with a fresh new look. Whether it’s a big change or a small one, a new hair style or color can do wonders for our emotional state, lifting our moods almost instantly.

Lose the Length
After years of having to hold on to long locks, a lot of us are finally going to be brave enough to go shorter. The textured lob is always a good idea. It’s an easy, wash-and-wear style that requires little to no maintenance save for the occasional trim and treatment. It’s also long enough that you can still tie it up, and a less drastic change for those who want something a little safer than a bob or a pixie cut.

Stay Wavy, Baby
It comes to no surprise that a lot of us will be happily forgoing some of our hair tools to embrace our natural waves. If you’ve always been the type to air dry, 2022 is going to be your year. The key to keeping your locks lush and luxe is to keep stock of products that are formulated especially for naturally wavy hair.

The Blunt Bob
This cut was one of the most in things back in the 90s—and hair experts think it’s going to make a major comeback in 2022. It can be worn razor-sharp sleek or with a bit more volume, with a heavy side part or even a centre part for all you Gen Z-ers.

The Balayage
A lot of us are looking for hair colors that are easy to maintain and are great for long wear. The balayage, a hair painting color technique in which the highlights are painted on to create a more natural effect, fits that bill perfectly. Play up your natural hair with some warm blonde shades or go the cool route with some ash highlights.

Very Peri
Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2022 is sure to make its way into our dye job wishlists, and some salons have already hopped onto the bandwagon. It may not be for everyone—be sure to get acquainted with the proper hair care tips should you decide to go this route—but you’ll certainly be very much in trend by rocking this shade!

The Middle Part
Ah, the part so many of us are afraid of trying out, simply because it can look severe or unforgiving, on occasion. Great for highlighting one’s facial features—because side parts draw more attention to certain features—and to establish symmetry, it looks fantastic on long, straight hair as well as on shoulder- or chin-length bobs and lobs.

Double Processed Blonde
High-maintenance color jobs are also predicted to have their day in the sun in the coming year. A favorite is what they refer to as the double processed blonde—base, highlights, and, if needed, bleach all the way—made famous by entrepreneur, DJ, and heiress Paris Hilton. It might have you in the salon chair quite often, but the results are always worth it.

All Black
Soft blacks and jet-blacks will both be in this coming year, so you don’t have to worry about it being too dark or too harsh. A soft, cool-toned black will be extra flattering on a tan, as seen on pop star Dua Lipa here.
