Consider This Your Cheat Sheet to Specialty Shampoos
Here's how choosing the right ones will elevate your haircare routine
Like it or not, our hair makes a difference in framing our faces and presenting ourselves. With all the hair care options and suggested routines in today’s beauty buzz and market, choosing the right one for your specific hair needs can be overwhelming, and finding the perfect shampoo for you feels like unearthing a hidden gem. That's where specialty shampoos come into play. These products are designed to address unique hair concerns, and using the right one can transform your hair from ordinary to fabulous.
For a quick lesson on specialty shampoos, we asked Jo Tubato, Azta Urban Salon’s Lead Stylist and Operations Director, for insights. With over two decades of experience in the salon industry and multiple recognitions under his belt, Jo Tubato has been dubbed as one of the Philippines’ Top Five Hair Stylists and has often topped as a finalist in renowned hair coloring competitions. He has proudly been with Azta Urban Salon for 18 years and counting.
“Specialty shampoos are shampoos formulated to address specific hair and scalp concerns beyond basic cleansing. It usually contains specialized ingredients that target certain issues like anti-brass or helps to moisturize dry dehydrated hair and scalp and more,” Jo explains.
Look Good on Hue (Color-Protect Shampoos)
If you love changing up your hair color, whether it's bold reds, icy blondes, or rich brunettes, a color-protecting shampoo is your best friend. These shampoos are formulated to keep your color vibrant and prevent fading. Look for ones that are sulfate-free as sulfates can strip your color.
“To neutralize yellowness that will appear every time artificial color bleeds due to washing, use a purple shampoo. (Tigi Bed Head Purple Toning Shampoo, L’Oreal Silver Shampoo, and Cynos Blondie are good options)
To neutralize orange tones on the hair, especially Asian hair that has a thick/coarse texture with warmer tones, use blue shampoo. (ARTEGO Good Society Blue Shampoo)
To enhance red color deposits on the hair, a red shampoo will prolong red hues. (The Alchemic Red Shampoo by Davines is good for salon-made redheads,” Jo weighs in)
Hydration Hits (Moisturizing Shampoos)
Dry, brittle hair? Most of us have experienced this, especially when we experience an intense heat index! A moisturizing shampoo can bring your locks back to life. These shampoos are packed with hydrating ingredients like argan oil, coconut oil, and shea butter. They work wonders in replenishing moisture and giving your hair that silky, smooth texture. I personally recommend Human Nature’s Moisturizing+ PLUS Shampoo, partnered with their Revival Coco Mask.
Vavavoom on Volume (Volumizing Shampoos)
For those with fine or limp hair, volumizing shampoos are a game-changer. They add body and lift, making your hair look fuller and more luscious. Look for shampoos that contain lightweight ingredients and avoid heavy oils that can weigh your hair down. Davines’ VOLU Shampoo and the L'Oréal Paris EverPure Volume Shampoo are fabulous picks to give your hair that extra oomph.
Free from Frizz (Anti-Frizz Shampoos)
Humidity can be our mane’s worst enemy, turning sleek styles into frizzy messes. Anti-frizz shampoos are formulated to smooth and tame unruly hair. Ingredients like keratin and silicone coat the hair, providing a barrier against moisture and keeping frizz at bay. Keratin treatments also reduce frizziness big time. “Sulfate-free Shampoos are suitable for keratin-treated hair because it's gentle and does not contain harsh sulfates that strip the hair's natural oil or moisture. I recommend Nounou Shampoo and Momo Shampoo both by Davines,” Jo shares.
Scalp Detoxers (Clarifying Shampoos)
Every now and then, our scalp needs a deep clean to remove product buildup and impurities. Clarifying shampoos are like a detox for your hair and scalp, leaving them refreshed and rejuvenated. However, they can be drying, so it's best to use them once a week. Human Nature’s Clarifying Shampoo and Healthy Options’ Avalon Organics Clarifying Lemon Shampoo are perfect for that squeaky-clean feel.
To address more specific scalp issues, Jo shares, “For scalp problems that involve dandruff, the Natural Tech Purifying Shampoo by Davines will surely help. For thinning and falling hair, there’s the Natural Tech Energizing Shampoo by Davines, and for excessive oil in the scalp, there’s the Natural Tech Rebalancing Shampoo by Davines.
Sensitive Saviors (Gentle Shampoos)
If your scalp is sensitive or you prefer a more natural approach, gentle shampoos are your go-to. These shampoos are free from harsh chemicals and fragrances, making them ideal for delicate scalps. Brands like Aveda, Zenutrients, and Be Organic offer gentle formulas that cleanse without causing irritation.
Curl Carers (Curl Shampoos)
Differing hair types have differing needs, too. Curly hair tends to be drier than other hair types, so hydration is key. Look for shampoos and conditioners specifically formulated for curly hair. These products typically contain ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and glycerin, which provide much-needed moisture. Curly hair doesn’t need to be shampooed as often; once or twice a week is usually enough. Never skip conditioner. Apply a generous amount and let it sit for a few minutes to deeply moisturize your curls. Consider using a leave-in conditioner for extra hydration. “Formulated to enhance and help define curly or wavy hair, Calma Sultra Cleansing Conditioner & Love Curl by Davines are good products,” Jo recommends.
Tips for Choosing the Right Shampoo
- Know Your Hair Type: Understanding whether your hair is oily, dry, color-treated, fine, or thick will guide you in selecting the most suitable shampoo.
- Read the Labels: Look for key ingredients that cater to your specific needs, and avoid harsh chemicals like sulfates and parabens.
- Listen to Your Hair: Pay attention to how your hair reacts to different shampoos. If it feels dry, switch to a more moisturizing formula; if it's weighed down, try a volumizing one.
- Mix and Match: Don't be afraid to have a few different shampoos in your rotation. Your hair's needs can change with the seasons or even your lifestyle.
