It was an afternoon of exploring beauty, style, and well-being through the different areas and booths that we had. During the event, we had the Dove Dermacare Scalp Clinic where you get the opportunity to talk to a dermatologist about your scalp and get scalp care tips.

After Beauty & Wellness Editor Kate Paras-Santiago talked about the tips in makeup and skincare, we also had Dr. Candy Drilon-Dalman who discussed the role of Stress Management in Overall Health.

Dr. Candy is the co-founder, medical director and managing partner of Centro Holistico. She is a licensed medical doctor, medical acupuncturist and Functional & Integrative Medicine physician. With Centro Holistico, she aimed to promote holistic health and wellness specializing in reversing chronic disease.

We caught up with Dr. Candy to ask her some key questions about haircare.

1. Can stress really cause dandruff or hairfall?

Long-term stress or chronic stress can actually cause dandruff. This is because of the hormonal imbalance that comes with stress.

“With hormonal imbalance, you can either develop dry scalp or super oily scalp, which can both cause dandruff,” explains Dr. Candy. Why dandruff isn’t contagious, there are many different causes such as overly oily scalp or extra dry scalp. “The other one can be fungal infection, explains Dr. Candy.

She also noted that nutritional imbalances such as lacking in B complex, vitamin D, and zinc, can cause dandruff as well.

2. Is there a connection between dandruff and hair loss?

While dandruff cannot cause hair loss by itself, because of the chronic inflammation, you might often scratch your scalp and cause damage.

“It can cause hair loss because once you damage your scalp, the hair follicles will die,” explains Dr. Candy. “So you have to be careful not to keep scratching and make sure you find the root cause of dandruff,” she adds.

3. What are the best ways to combat dandruff?

The first thing she recommends is to take a good look at your diet to make sure you have enough Vitamin D, B Complex, Vitamin C, and Zinc, as well as other minerals.

And then work on the condition of your scalp: is it oily or extra dry?

If you notice that your scalp is dry, consider a nutritional cure also, like taking in more fats like olive oil, virgin coconut oil, or fatty fish. But if it’s extra oily, check on your hormones as well to make sure they’re in balance.

To further protect the health of your scalp, consider Dove Dermacare Scalp Anti-Dandruff Shampoo with Olacare Scalp Actives. Dove's scalp and skincare actives give you up to 3x scalp hydration and 2x stronger scalp that's resistant to dandruff.

This product relieves and soothes the itch that dandruff gives, plus hydrating dry scalp. It’s gentle enough to be used every day and is great for smooth, touchably soft hair.

4. Now let’s turn to hairfall, what are the signs of hairfall?

According to Dr. Candy, the signs can be quite simple such as hair not being as thick as before when you try to tie it, or having hair on the drain, and a more prominent and receding hairline.

“Natural hair fall takes around 100 strands per day,” says Dr. Candy, but if you notice that every time you run your fingers through your hair and see that there’s a clump of hair of around 5-10 strands, then that’s a sign of hair fall.

5. How do hairfall shampoos work?

“These depend on the shampoos but they usually have natural ingredients that stimulate the scalp to further increase the blood circulation on the scalp,” says Dr. Candy.

In some cases, some help control the oiliness and dryness of the scalp, and some shampoos are medicated to stimulate hair growth.

One such shampoo is Dove’s Dermacare Scalp Hair Fall Recovery. With Scalp Care Actives and Vitamin B3, it nourishes the scalp and strengthens hair for stronger, thicker-looking, and dandruff free-hair.

The key here is making your hair strong to prevent breakage and hair fall. This works well with those who have weak, falling hair, and it also has that volumizing effect. Overall, hair is nourished, stronger, and more beautiful.
