Essential Hair-Care Treatments to Balance Out All the Styling this Party Season

One of the country’s Top Hair Stylists, Jo Tubato of Azta Urban Salon, weighs in

Celebrations and gatherings are starting to fill our calendars with Christmas parties left and right. It’s a season to dress up, prettify, and style our crowning glory for an overall glamor look while we partake in merriment and cheer. Curling, ironing, straightening treatments, and coloring—these are all cosmetic procedures that bring out the personality while enhancing one’s natural beauty, but they do take a toll on the health of the hair.

Jo Tubato, Azta Urban Salon’s Lead Stylist and Operations Director, gives us insights on how to revitalize and bring back nourishment to the hair with all the styling it will endure this holiday season. With over two decades of experience in the salon industry and multiple recognitions under his belt, Jo Tubato has been dubbed as one of the Philippines’ Top Five Hair Stylists, and has often topped as a finalist in renowned hair coloring competitions. He has proudly been with Azta Urban Salon for 18 years and counting.

“For trends, the butterfly haircut, curtain bangs, ombre coloring/highlights, steambond straightening, and Brazilian Keratin Treatment are what’s mostly availed right now,” shared Jo. Likened to a chef, Jo climbed the ranks and became a pioneer in crafting and concocting unique hair colors like metallics and smooth gradient tones (AKA ombre). No wonder Azta Urban Salon gained more popularity after they launched unique hair colors such as rose gold, silver, and gold. Since then, they’ve reached authority status when it comes to bold hair coloring.

“I was a basic hair cutter until Azta [Urban Salon] took me in and sent me to numerous coloring workshops and training. It was my biggest weakness before, but now I’m known for my color formulas and recipes, thanks to their encouragement and push. They really invested in and grew my talent.”

Among these trends, the ones that pose more serious risks to hair health are regular coloring, especially the ones with brighter and bolder hues that need bleaching, and the constant heat styling that does a lot of damage if the hair is not given the proper TLC. “If you have over-colored hair, we will do away with bleaching and apply a non-ammonia vegan formula, like Color Sublime,” shared Jo. It is important that their clients are pleased with their looks, but it’s just as equally important to look after hair health.

For those wanting a quick fix to damaged hair, there’s always Brazilian Keratin Treatment, a cosmetic hair procedure that Jo recommends. “It's a technology which coats your hair and makes it look shiny. It's cosmetic and doesn’t last long, but it does tame and beautify the hair for several weeks.”

Home hair care maintenance is possible with the right products

Jo notes that it’s highly essential to have a hair maintenance routine that you can do at home. These are hair masks with deep nourishing ingredients, like argan oil or virgin coconut oil. “I understand how it can be hard to keep going to the salon for hair maintenance, so you can have a weekly deep conditioning treatment that you can personally do at the comfort of your own home. If you enjoy heat styling your hair, like using a flat iron, curling wand, or blow dryer, it’s best to use heat protectant sprays. They really do a lot of wonders for the hair,” Jo weighed in.

Constant heat styling may affect overall hair health, with negative consequences like dryness and dehydration, breakage and split ends, color fading, dull appearance, and loss of elasticity. Using a heat protect can definitely slow down these effects.

Deep nourishing treatments are essential for those who enjoy constant coloring and styling

As for Azta Urban Salon’s haircare treatments, Jo recommends:

“For the Argan treatment, it works more on naturally dry hair. It’s a hair spa, best for hair that hasn't been touched by chemicals. But if your hair is chemically colored, it should be the nourishing treatment or deep intensive treatment, like the L’Oreal Powermix Conditioning Treatment. It’s different from any other hair conditioner, because it’s a concentrated additive for colored hair. The technology of a Powermix is that it strengthens the inside of the hair and also smooths down the outside, while providing lasting protection to the hair, and increases softness and shine. As for hair that’s been permed or relaxed, we have the Davines Nounou Pak hair treatment. It helps with combing, deep nourishment, and protection. It restores hydration and adds body to the hair, and makes it silky, not weighed down.”

Go ahead and slay your looks for this holiday’s festivities and gatherings. Just remember to keep in mind these recommendations, and have your locks thank you for it later.
