5 Hair and Scalp Health Myths Debunked by Dermatologists

Frequent hair shampooing stimulates hair fall, and other myths, debunked during Metro’s Office Takeover!

Last April 3, 2024, the third leg of the Metro Office Takeover took place at Concentrix Bridgetowne, where talks and a string of Q&A sessions were held. Here, we also caught up with an array of industry experts including dermatologists Dr. Katrina Luz and Dr. Nina Monterola

Dialogues were made around myths surrounding hair and scalp health, and some of them were squashed to the ground by our guest speakers as they shared insider tips and insights on beauty.

Presented by Dove and Unilever Beauty and Wellbeing, the fun-filled function also featured the Dove Dermacare Scalp Clinic, where attendees of the event were entitled to a free hair and scalp consultation.

Read on below as we rounded up some hair and scalp health myths and misconceptions debunked by dermatologists:

1. MYTH: Brush your hair 100 times for healthy hair.

Having to brush our hair around 100 times after taking a bath is a common old-wives’-tale classic. The belief that ‘the more we tidy up our hair, the more we make it healthy’ is actually a myth. According to hair and scalp health expert Dr. Katrina Luz, giving the hair enough strokes should tame the frizz and tuft. “You just have to brush your hair enough strokes para you detangle it, but if masyado mo siyang sino-stroke, ‘yung friction trauma, du’n ka puwedeng magkaroon ng hair fall,” she told in her lecture at the third leg of the Metro Office Takeover.

2. MYTH: Frequent shampooing causes hair fall.

Bakit ‘yung shampoo ‘yung ibe-blame? No! It’s important that you find first what type of scalp you have,” Dr. Katrina Luz claimed in her talk, debunking the traditional cliché that frequent hair shampooing stimulates hair fall. “Is it an oily scalp? Is it a dry scalp? And then, you can tailor how often you shampoo based on the type of your scalp.”

Dr. Nina Monterola of Dove Dermacare Scalp Clinic, aesthetic dermatologist, also kept us in the know as to how we should use shampoo. “If you’re someone who’s really exposed to pollution, you commute daily, I would suggest that you wash or shampoo frequently. If it’s not something that you experience daily, I’m fine with you using shampoo 3-4 times a week.”

3. MYTH: Oily hair doesn’t require conditioner.

Most people make it a point to apply conditioner after shampooing, but some believe otherwise. Filipinos, for one, would usually wonder if hair conditioners create more oil and moisture. Several even avoid conditioners, thinking that it will make their scalp oilier. “Who’s heard the myth na if you’re in the Philippines, hindi na kailangang mag-moisturize ng skin? That’s actually a myth and the same goes for your scalp, kasi your scalp is basically an extension of your face,” Dr. Katrina said.

4. MYTH: Dandruff is a gender-specific problem.

While it is true that dandruff is definitely more prevalent in males, it is also blind to gender and basically affects everyone on the spectrum. “There’s no one gender or more. Sometimes, it’s based on age. We associate it with fungal overgrowth,” Dr. Nina explained when asked if dandruff is associated more often with men.

“Everyone has the existing fungus in the scalp, but it’s just that people with dandruff have an overgrowth,” the dermatologist declared when we consulted at the Dove clinic. “If you experience dandruff, you can use anti-dandruff shampoos because anti-dandruff shampoos have antifungal ingredients to help with your dandruff.”

For those suffering from Dandruff, Dr. Nina recommends Dove Dermacare Scalp Soothing Moisture Shampoo with Olacare Scalp Actives. Dove's scalp and skincare actives give you up to 3x scalp hydration and a 2x stronger scalp that's resistant to dandruff.

She shares how this product can relieve and soothe the itch that dandruff gives, plus hydrating dry scalp. It’s gentle enough to be used every day and is great for smooth, touchably soft hair.

5. MYTH: Take supplements to have healthier hair.

Another misconception about having healthy scalp and hair is taking medication that is supposed to strengthen them. At times, we resort to random treatments that we believe are best for our hair and scalp health, but truth be told—not everything is doing its job. We have to determine the effects of a new purchase before we plan to really consume it. “I wouldn’t suggest taking supplements ‘cause right now, research does not suggest the need of supplementing—not unless you really have a nutritional deficiency,” Dr. Nina recommended.

Instead, Dr. Nina also shares that having the right shampoo can help with hairfall problems. In the case of Dove’s Dermacare Scalp Hairfall Recovery, it comes with Scalp Care Actives and Vitamin B3 which nourishes the scalp and strengthens hair for stronger, thicker-looking, and dandruff-free hair.

By making hair strong, you can prevent breakage and hairfall, which works well for those who have weak, falling hair, and also has a volumizing effect. With this, hair is more nourished and more beautiful.
