You’d have to be living under a rock to not know about Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour world domination. A lot of topics can be discussed regarding this momentous time in our pop culture history— what your favorite era is, the sparkly bodysuits, the friendship bracelets, the elaborate stages. But the most unlikely topic has yet to be explored: an unexpected guest made a surprise appearance on her Singapore shows. Her name? Humidity.

While Taylor Swift is known for her impressive flawless blonde hair, something happened at the Asian leg of her tour. Now, if you’re a Swiftie, you probably know about this already but for more casual fans or those who are just curious to know, The Eras Tour Singapore X account shared a clip of Taylor joking about her hair going back to its “Factory Settings Hair” because of the humidity on her March 3 show. The singer-songwriter said, “As you can see, my hair has returned to its factory settings, thanks to the humidity here. I’m not complaining. I like it.”

To give you a more in-depth and personal POV on this hair happening, we asked some Swifties what the Factory Settings hair is and here’s what they have to say: Bea Antonio, who works in PR, gave us the lowdown on T-Swift’s hair situation, even giving a timeline on when it happens exactly during the tour. “Basically, it’s Taylor’s hair going to its natural curly state because of humidity and sweat! Since her concert is a 3.5-hour show with no full breaks (the longest break in between was probably just a quick 2-minute interval), she doesn’t have time to touch up her hair. She starts with straight hair in her Lover era and by Evermore, her 3rd era, her hair is all curled up/frizzy and wet from sweat.”

In addition, singer-songwriter, Jayda who also saw the concert in Singapore echoes this saying, “So the whole thing with Taylor’s ‘factory settings hair’ began when her hair returned to its natural curly state (because of Singapore’s humidity) throughout her 3-and-a-half-hour-long Eras tour shows in the country. She usually starts the concert with straightened hair and bangs in place, then as each ‘era’ progressed, her hair became progressively curlier.”

We know that the weather was the culprit for Taylor going back to her roots (her hair’s roots to be exact) but what exactly is the explanation behind it? We had to know so we asked hair expert and hairstylist, Mark Anthony Rosales (who also happens to be a Swiftie!), why this hair phenomenon happens and why you should totally embrace it if you have naturally curly hair too.

According to Mark, “The transformative effect of humidity on hair can be likened to a ‘factory reset’ wherein environmental conditions prompt a return to the hair’s natural state. Understanding this relationship between environmental conditions and hair texture emphasizes the importance of personalized hair care to manage these effects effectively.” So while there’s not much we can do about external environmental factors (even when you’re a pop star), there are definitely ways to manage it! But of course, if you’re Taylor Swift in the middle of a sold out, record-breaking concert tour, you just have to say it is what it is and continue with your set. But this is also a great way to show that while styling one’s hair is fun, it’s also cool to embrace your original hair type! Mark supports this by saying, “I always encourage my clients to embrace their natural hair texture. It’s about celebrating its beauty and uniqueness. There’s a way to keep your hair healthy and discover styling options that enhance your unique features, like using mousse and wave spray. Choosing to embrace your natural hair is a confident expression of self-love and acceptance, similar to what Taylor did!”

The hair comes to life

As a bonus, we just had to ask our Swifties what it was like seeing Taylor’s mane go from straight to italic in real-time. Bea shared, “It was funny seeing it so early in the show ‘cause SG was more humid than her previous Japan and Australia shows. But it just makes you realize ang galing niya rin talaga for doing a three-and-a-half hour show straight— frizzy hair be damned.”

Jayda, who knows a thing about performing live herself, says that these kind of live events can really have unexpected turns but that as a fan watching, it made the show more authentic to her, especially because she has a similar hair type to one of her biggest music inspirations, “As a fellow curly/wavy-haired girl, I could relate to her. I did a show in Singapore a couple of years ago and I had a similar experience where my hair before and after going on stage was a totally different story. But it definitely made it more real for me! I think it made the concert experience even more unique as it was different from the ‘default’ look she sports. She rocked it, either way, I feel! And that just goes to show that when doing live shows, you really don’t know what you’ll get as you get exposed to the elements and different weather conditions.”
