Your Base, But Better: Foundation Picks For Filipino Skin

According to expert Filipino makeup artists, these are the foundation brand they swear by

Foundation is aptly named. It is the starting point of any makeup look. Even if you opt for a light layer or a skin tint, an even base is the best canvas be it a nighttime smokey glam or a fresh, just blush daytime face.

Not all foundations are the same as every individual’s skin and preferences can vary. For Filipinos, a good foundation should offer a wide shade range. Given our mixed heritage, our undertones reflect a rich culture and various colors. Every morena is beautifully unique as is every chinita and every mestiza out there.

In The Philippines, we also opt for something more long-wearing as our climate has a lot of humidity and heat. And since we tend to opt for such formulas, the foundation must be non-comedogenic so we don’t have to worry about acne and clogged pores even if we go overtime with our makeup. For Jigs Mayuga, the makeup behind countless campaigns, commercials, and celebrity looks for 20 years, he swears by two brands. “Hands down will have to be Double Wear by Estée Lauder. I’ve been using it for over a decade now.  It’s the best for bridal looks with our humidity and heat.” He also loves MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation as it has a wide shade range.

Jigs also shares a tip to keep our foundation looking its best. “Make sure to moisturize the skin based on your skin type no matter how humid the weather is. Allow the skin to completely absorb the moisturizer before applying your foundation.”

Jake Galvez, the go-to makeup artist of Kim Chiu and Belle Mariano says that the MAKEUP FOREVER’S HD SKIN Waterproof Natural Matte Foundation is his ultimate and tried-and-tested base makeup. “This an iconic product famously used for bridal, editorial, red carpet, and any special events type of makeup that requires long-wear. This foundation is non-comedogenic, waterproof, and sweat-proof! Perfect for Filipinas looking for budge-proof foundation.”

Jake says that the best foundation tool isn’t available on the shelves. “When applying liquid foundation, fingers are the best way to apply foundation and best for a natural look. Using a brush allows you to create or achieve a full coverage base, but can leave streaks from the brush bristles.”

Mayesa De Los Santos, a favorite makeup artist for today’s most beautiful muses and society ladies, says she likes using the Dior Forever Skin Glow. “It is my current favorite foundation. It has a natural, luminous finish that compliments the golden undertones typical of Filipina skin. The formula is designed to last all day, making it ideal for the humid and warm climate in our country.”

Dorothy Mamalio, makeup artist to countless brides and models like Jach Manere and Jullian Culas says that when it comes to foundation, she chooses lightweight formulas that aren’t sticky or heavy. Instead of applying a thick layer immediately, she advises to build your foundation through thin layers and to set your foundation with powder and setting spray. She has many foundation recommendations for Filipino skin including the Issy Active Foundation, Ellana Cosmetics Loose Mineral SkinShield Foundation, and the Issy True Flex Skin Balm.
