Girl Group XG Showcases Their Strength Through Unique Beauty Looks

The South Korea-based Japanese septet aims to break ground and empower their audience, not just through music, but through styling as well

It was clear from the get-go that XG—short for “Extraordinary Girls”—was gunning to fill a completely different lane in the K-Pop girl group arena. Based in Korea, hailing from Japan, and singing (mostly) in English, there’s a lot to unpack with regards to the skillset and versatility Jurin, Chisa, Hinata, Harvey, Juria, Maya, and Cocona bring to the table. Aegyo plays little to no part in these badass babes’ arsenal; the girls look and act cool, and their unique styling easily matches the unorthodox vibe of their performances.

They lean towards hip-hop, Y2K, and skater-inspired influences, running the gamut from cool New York urbanite to laidback Los Angeles gal. In an interview with Nylon US, Jurin mentioned that they take inspiration from 90s looks, with girl group TLC and the late singer Aaliyah being their top style icons. The Fenty empire ruler Rihanna is a huge role model for them as well. With regards to make-up, mascara, blush, and eyeliner are the girls’ top essentials. Hinata also said she likes to over line her lips, which is a very 90s trend to follow.

The concept for their debut single “Tippy Toes” feels like a test run for everything that came after. Jeweled lids, razor-sharp cat eyes in colored liner, and bold lips in hues of red and coral dominated the hypothetical beauty Pinterest board, while sleek straight hair, messy ponytails, and loose braids completed their devil-may-care look. Pretty Harvey is the head-turner here, every bit the princess with her pearl-studded lids, which are the focal point of her dewy look. In “Mascara,” member Hinata stands out with flower and butterfly appliqués framing her eyes, making her look all the more ethereal, especially due to her platinum locks.

The Y2K factor kicks in heavily in the “Shooting Star” MV. The girls sport an assortment of hairstyles and colors: blues, pinks, and auburns made extra fun with braids wrapped in candy-colored beads, clips, scrunchies, and ribbons. Maya gets a crazy hair moment here, with her acid green dip-dyed pigtails that glow under black light. Sweet-faced Juria looks extra cute here as well, with purple-tipped space buns high on her hair, blunt bangs, strobed highlighter, and glossy lip

“Puppet Show” brings frosty make-up and doll-like ringlets into the picture. The always striking Chisa resembles a Lisa Frank-like bride with her punchy berry blush, bright pink lip, and purple winged liner. Leader Jurin comes in with the urban flavor she’s particularly fond of: bright blue hair, intense blue that sweeps across her nose, a face full of glitter and decorative grillz over her teeth.

XG went viral on TikTok for “GRL GVNG,” a retro Neo-futuristic MV with strong cyberpunk influences. Each member’s face is painted with sigils, making them look more like video game characters or AI-generated avatars. Their latest project, “Woke Up,”came across as a shock because Cocona actually shaves her head in the MV, showing everyone just how fearless they are when it comes to breaking beauty standards. Oh, and the grillz are back, and in full force, too.

When asked if there was any beauty look they want to avoid, the girls were quick to say they aren’t scared of anything—and even if they are, they’re still going to take on the challenge and will do whatever it takes to execute the concept well.

XG will be in Manila for their first world tour, The Howl, on 2 August at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Filo ALPHAZ, have you secured your tickets yet?
