WATCH: How Nadine Lustre Designed “Lustrous” With Filipinas In Mind
As the first ever local celebrity to create a full collection with an international brand, Nadine Lustre is out to set the standard for makeup that’s for Filipinas, and by a Filipina; the “Lustrous” collection, which she designed in collaboration with BYS Cosmetics, aims to be just that, finally putting a spotlight on Philippine beauty. But apart from the jaw-dropping launch, which comprised of multiple magazine covers of Nadine for the month of April, the design process for Lustrous goes deeper than the glossies.
You’ll need to read about the backstories here to fully appreciate the making of Lustrous, and why you should get your ASAP.
Practical But Trendy
Us Filipinas have a very active lifestyle, with daily commutes, work, travel and a whole lot of fun times with friends, so it’s only appropriate that we deserve a makeup that is as flexible.
“[International brands] really want to come into the Philippines because of how the beauty industry is here.”, explains Angelina Goyena, General Manager of BYS in the Philippines, who keeps their loyal clientele of “working girls” in mind as the brand conceptualized Lustrous. “We love to experiment, we love our beauty products. We can’t get enough.”
Tropical Weather Appropriate
Nadine’s first Lustrous collection is actually for summer, with colors and finishes that are meant to compliment the humid season. Of course, everyone knows it’s technically summer temperatures all year in Philippines, so consider this collection as an investment. Moreover, the Lustrous summer collection is inspired by escapades on the beach; that’s right, you can go about your sandy walks, quick dips and sailing with Lustrous on.
“[Nadine] wanted to come up with a summer collection, which, if you go to the beach, doesn’t just easily melt.”, says Angelina. Asides from the waterproof black mascara and waterproof brow products, Nadine opted to have no lipsticks for this season, and went for lip-cheek tints instead. Angelina explains, “[So] when you get into the water, you come out still with that tint.”
Flattering For Deep-Toned Skin
It’s true that Filipina skin tones vary from fair to deep; but let’s face it, there is more public favor towards lighter skin. Lustrous, on the other hand, wants to give that special shout-out to the morena beauties (which actually comprises the majority of Filipinas) by curating colors and finishes that specifically compliment darker skin, like warm, shimmering eyeshadows, and a playful pop of blue.
“Nadine likes to be under the sun!”, remarks Angelina, pointing out that the Lustrous Chief Creative Designer isn’t afraid to go on hikes, long-dives and treks under the cloudless skies, embracing the warmth. “So the colors are bagay pang morena talaga!”
Designed With Love From Nadine
One of the most amazing things about working with Nadine, notes Angelina, is her dedication to Lustrous and her fans. “She knows what she wants.”, says Angelina, proudly. In spite of her busy schedule, Nadine finds time to give feedback on her makeup line, swatching various shades of bronzer, and how she insisted that her eyeshadow palettes absolutely must have a brush (not a sponge applicator). Everything must be perfect for her Filipina fans!
“I feel so privileged [that] BYS gave me an opportunity to create and put out my own makeup line.”, says a beaming Nadine during the press launch. “My whole creative input is in the makeup, so it’s like my [baby]. So [the fans] get my babies if they buy the makeup.”
