Why The Belo Mermaid Facial is Just What Your Pandemic-Stricken Skin Needs

Soak up hydration and say hello to younger-looking, glowing skin with this new facial treatment

We’re over a year into quarantine and needless to say, it’s starting to majorly show on my face. Okay, I’m being a little dramatic but hear me out here for a second. Staying home (and safe) has been a definite need but it isn’t without causing some problems for your skin.

Recently, I read a few articles about just how much our skin has changed since Covid-19 came into our reality. Dermatologists have shared that with the quarantine came a major lifestyle change, which has inevitably caused our skin to encounter new concerns it never had to deal with before. I personally have suffered from two big changes. First, my skin had become duller, more dry from being indoors. I thought it was just in my head but apparently being indoors exposes us all to uncirculated air, more often containing dust and other indoor pollutants that can irritate and harm our skin, causing dryness and yes, even breakouts. Second, my skin became prone to acne more often than just “that time of the month,” with what products that worked before, no longer working its magic to the extent that I desperately needed them to—resulting in semi-flaky, dull skin that even regular exfoliation could not save.

But the drastic change ultimately made sense. Before the pandemic, I would have a facial every 6 weeks. Now, in the pandemic, I’d be lucky if I do it every 3 months! My skincare routine, which has always been something I religiously attended to, has shifted and changed in so many ways (and continues to, if I’m being honest,) ever since we’ve had to shelter in place. It’s good and bad: it needed some shaking up and an introduction to new products and new active ingredients; but it also left me feeling a little helpless in the skincare department. Not to mention I was also trying to find a way to accommodate all the drying products that had found their way to my beauty shelf, thanks to dreaded maskne and stress-related breakouts. My skin needed some help and I wasn’t sure what could “save” it—until the Belo Mermaid Facial came into the picture.

Are Beauty Products With Alcohol Safe? We Break It Down For You

When Belo first launched the Belo Mermaid Facial, in a campaign starring Ivana Alawi, I got excited. The Mermaid Facial is Belo’s newest, advanced multi-step treatment to deeply cleanse, exfoliate, and hydrate—all in one quick 45-minute treatment. It can be broken down in three major steps: cleansing, exfoliating, and hydrating. It promises to result in younger-looking, supple, and glowing skin. Sign me up!

Having tried other hydrating facials (many of which are priced significantly higher), I was keen to try it out. I was hoping that Belo’s latest hydrating facial would be just as effective (yet ultimately a more economical) solution that could help revive and bring back a healthy glow to my skin. And I was not disappointed!

The procedure

My Belo Mermaid Facial treatment began as all other facials: with a quick aromatherapy sesh and thorough cleansing of my neck and face using the ZO Skin Health Gentle Cleanser. Now onto the facial itself. First, the skin is mildly cleansed with a lactic acid base. Lactic acid is known for improving the skin’s natural ability to hydrate, amping the skin’s moisture factor. Next, the T-zone (forehead and nose area) is deeply cleansed with a glycolic acid base, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that greatly aids in exfoliation, helping bring out new, baby-soft skin from underneath. To finish, skin is hydrated with a hyaluronic acid base—a star ingredient (and an essential in my book) which holds up to a thousand times its weight in water.

Since I opted for my facial to come with professional cleaning, I also got some TLC to the more acne-prone areas of my face. My Belo facial technician thoroughly cleaned my clogged up pores and small pimples on my jaw and chin area, resulting from my hormonal acne. For those who are interested in getting the facial with cleaning (and I highly recommend you do so,) this step comes before the hydrating hyaluronic acid step.

The treatment is worth your consideration if you (like me) have been suffering from dull skin due to prolonged blue-screen time and being indoors all the time. It does tick a lot of boxes, too. The facial is ideal for those with dull and dry skin, uneven skin tone and texture, large pores, and fine lines and wrinkles. It’s suitable for all skin types however the frequency does vary. For most, the facial can be done every two weeks, but for those with active acne and have breakouts, consult with your doctor first.

The Belo Mermaid Facial is available at all Belo clinics at Php 7,500 per session (with cleaning, Php 7,000 without cleaning). Interested?
