3 Simple Skincare Tips For The Rainy Season, According To A Dermatologist
Come rain or shine, skincare is a must!
For many of us, the rainy season may be a welcome relief from the scorching heat of the summer, but as you know, not everything about the rains are good—be it getting caught in an unexpected shower, dealing with frizzy hair, or working your plans around the unpredictable weather.
But that’s not all, if you’re a skincare addict just like us, you probably already know that rains can even be harsh on your skin. You have to battle acne, humidity, and excess dirt and oil, more than you would have to in any other season. So, it is of utmost importance that you follow a proper skincare routine to make sure it stays as delightful as the coolness this weather brings!
During the rainy season, you must also know that you should always keep your skin away from dampness. This is because damp skin creates a favorable condition for microbes and fungi to stick to your skin, which can result in all sorts of skin problems ranging from irritation and rashes, to ringworm. To guide you, we talked to Beautique MD’s dermatologist, Dr. Anna Palabyab-Rufino to give all the tips you need to make your skin monsoon-ready!
Metro.Style: What are the essential skincare tips during rainy days?
Dr. Anna Palabyab-Rufino: During the rainy season, it automatically becomes more humid in our tropical country. This also means that our skin can become more oily, making it more prone to acne and fungal infections. It is important to cleanse our faces at least two times a day to help prevent these skin problems. Exfoliating the skin can also help get rid of the dead skin on the surface and unclog the pores to reveal healthier skin underneath. It also helps products penetrate into the skin better making them more effective.
MS: Do we still need to use sunscreen during the rainy season?
APR: Yes! The UV rays of the sun penetrate through clouds. I suggest that everyone wears sun protecting even indoors because they can go through windows as well. Don’t forget to reapply every 2-3 hours when you’re outdoors.
MS: What are the ways to take care of oily skin during rainy days?
APR: Use products that help reduce and control the oiliness of the skin. Gentle exfoliation is important and this can be achieved by using products such as cleansers, toners and creams that can help peel-off the upper layers of the skin. I would recommend products containing AHA, BHA, PHA or retinol in toner form. They should be used with caution or less often for those with sensitive skin. Also, using a light moisturizer is better than heavy creams. A matte-finish or velvety sunscreen also helps lessen that sticky, heavy feeling you get after applying layers of products on your skin.
