3 Revolutionary Ways An App Empowers Women
It’s time for us Filipinas to make the first move!
Social networking app Bumble’s recent official launch in the Philippines is more than just an arrival of a new digital platform, it’s an empowering call for women to make the first move.
Bumble, founded by Whitney Wolfe Herd “as a way to challenge the antiquated rules of dating,” is known as the woman-first online connection platform that empowers women to be unapologetically proactive. From its inception in 2014, Bumble has now grown far beyond a dating app and into a social network that allows people of all genders to make empowered connections in important areas of their lives: love life, social life, and careers. As one of the fastest growing social networking apps, to date, Bumble has over 50 million users from around the world, inspiring over half a billion first moves by women. This time around, Bumble is formally opening its operations in the Philippines to help further empower Filipinas.
“We’ve seen really great organic uptake on the platform in the Philippines, and so it seems that Filipinos are just naturally finding their way and downloading Bumble already. And so we decided to really look into it, hone in on this country, and make this our first step into Southeast Asia,” shared Michelle Battersby, associate marketing director of Bumble APAC.

This observation was echoed by Alex Suarez, country lead of Bumble Philippines. “One of the reasons we feel that Bumble is such a great fit for the Philippines is that Filipinas are already, in a sense, empowered. They have a huge say whether it’s at home or at work. I think what’s most exciting about bringing Bumble here is that it’s such a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Filipinas and all the amazing things they have accomplished whether it’s in work, in life, the arts or whatever field that is,” Suarez said.
Bumble is more than an app, it’s a movement. Here are three ways on how Bumble, through its three modes, is breaking barriers and pushing boundaries in terms of women empowerment as networking platform.
Bumble Date empowers women to make the first move when it comes to dating. This Bumble mode is a dating platform known for its unique proposition of requiring women to make the first move and message a match to initiate a conversation. It also makes good on its promise as an easygoing, high quality, and playful yet safe space for users.
“When I founded Bumble in 2014, I had seen so many of the smart, wonderful women in my life still waiting around for men to ask them out,” Wolfe Herd said. “For all the advances we had been making in workplaces and corridors of power, the gender dynamics of dating and romance still seemed so outdated. I thought, what If I could flip that on its head? What if women sent the first message?”
Bumble BFF empowers women to expand their social circle. Bumble BFF is a location-based, platonic friend-finding platform within the Bumble app. If you find yourself in a new city or if you simply wanted to expand your social circle, it’s a great way to establish new meaningful friendships.
Bumble Bizz empowers women to connect professionally and find growth opportunities. Bumble Bizz is created so professionals can connect with each other, share, and learn. At Bumble Bizz, one can pursue a career change, meet team members, or become a mentor.
“If you match with a man on Bumble, the guy can’t talk to the girl at all unless she makes the first move. And we believe that if you make the first move for a date, then you can make the first move in business networking. If you can make the first move on Bumble, then perhaps you can make the first move in your day-to-day life. If we’re giving you that confidence and we’re showing you and making you feel capable to go out and make that first move, then maybe you’ll make the first move in your job, maybe you’ll put your hand up for a promotion, maybe you’ll ask for a pay raise,” Battersby explained.
“We really just build women’s confidence to go after what they want,” she stated meaningfully. There’s never been a better moment to meet and connect with new and interesting people. Making the first move could change your life!
