Alex Eala Guadalajara WTA US Open

<p>There are times when unfortunate things, or what seem to be a setback initially, may just be a harbinger of better things. For <strong>Alexandra Eala</strong>, the lesson of letting things happen and making the best of whatever is thrown your way is certainly coming true.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1757301839123WTA 125 Alex Eala.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p>An early second-round exit at the US Open the previous week meant Alex would be waiting a full week and a half before the WTA Sao Paolo 250 in Brazil would start on September 8. To keep her competitive, I can only guess that the decision was made to enter the Guadalajara 125 Open in Mexico—and look who emerged victorious to raise a championship trophy!</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1757301942803Metro.Style Alex Eala Guadalajara WTA US Open 9.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p>Overcoming a sluggish start that saw her give up the first set 1-6, Alex buckled down, showed her mettle and never-say-die attitude, and annexed the next two sets, 7-5, and 6-3, to complete this gritty win over the unseeded Panna Udvardy from Hungary. Alex was the second seed in this tournament and had beaten Arianne Hartono, Varvara Lepchenko, Nicole Fossa Huergo, and Kayla Day to reach the Finals.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1757301966169Metro.Style Alex Eala Guadalajara WTA US Open 8.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p>Now, if the names of those players aren’t household names for your average tennis fan, that is precisely because it is a WTA 125 tournament, happening while the second week of the Grand Slam US Open was still going on. The big names of Women’s Tennis would be at the US Open or at the official WTA Tour tournaments.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1757302009265Metro.Style Alex Eala Guadalajara WTA US Open 6.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p>The WTA 125 tournaments are also called the WTA Challengers, the second-highest level of Women’s competition; below the top-tier WTA Tour, and above the ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour tournaments. Match results from WTA 125 events are counted and added to WTA players’ overall head-to-head Win/Loss statistics, and Alex will be credited with the 125 points at stake in this tournament. But realize that titles won at a WTA 125 are separately counted from that player’s achievements at WTA Tour-level tournaments.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1757302045645Metro.Style Alex Eala Guadalajara WTA US Open 4.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p>The Sao Paolo WTA 250 is a WTA Tour-level tournament, so here’s hoping that Alex can carry this momentum on to the following week in Brazil. I say all this not to downplay her achievement, because I’m certainly proud of her accomplishment, but just to state some facts about WTA 125 - and so we’re not surprised when future news reports will say that Alex has still to win a WTA Tour event.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1757302073964Metro.Style Alex Eala Guadalajara WTA US Open 3.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p>Confused? Don’t be, if you want to put it into a more understandable analogy, think of owning a PBA basketball team, and you haven’t scored a single win at the PBA level. While the PBA playoffs are going on, and you’ve been eliminated, you join your team in a PBL knock-out challenge and win the challenge. It’s a great feat, but can you now say you’ve won at the PBA level? You compete at that level, but you can’t claim a victory yet.</p><p>The Eastbourne Final Alex reached earlier this year was a WTA Tour 250 tournament, and she came that close to winning that; so let’s keep supporting her.
