Best of Bee Gees with Manila Symphony Orchestra

We caught the Saturday night fever when The Best of the Bee Gees tribute show was held at the Newport Performing Arts Theatre. We watched the last show last April 11 (the first one was on April 10, followed by an afternoon show the next day, and yep, it was indeed Saturday night when we watched), and the nostalgia and energy that filled the concert venue truly left a lasting impression on the audience. The Best of the Bee Gees core members are Evan Webster (as Barry Gibb), Russell Davey (as Robin Gibb), and Greg Wain (as Maurice Gibb). The show, which spotlighted the Bee Gees&#x27; greatest hits, was done with the Manila Symphony Orchestra, conducted by George Ellis, with special guests Nick Endacott-Gibb (Maurice Gibb&#x27;s son), Debora McLane (Bee Gees&#x27; niece), and singer Roslyn Loxton. The tribute show celebrated the iconic 1979 “Greatest” album of the Bee Gees. If there&#x27;s anything this concert series proved, it&#x27;s that the Bee Gees&#x27; music is truly timeless—oldies but goodies. The musical group formed in 1958 by brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb remains a core memory for many, including my parents. Honestly, coming into the show, I knew it would be a gathering for our beloved senior citizens who grew up listening to this band&#x27;s songs. But I was pleasantly surprised to see a mix of young ones (like Gen Zs and Gen Alphas), millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers in the crowd. And mind you, the younger ones in the audience didn&#x27;t seem like they were just forced to be chaperones for their parents or grandparents—they were singing and dancing along!  I didn&#x27;t realize how much I loved the Bee Gees&#x27; songs as well. I was singing along (wow, I knew the lyrics by heart!), grooving, and stomping my feet to the beat. I then thought that all those Sunday mornings when my father would play retro music had an impact on me. I suddenly remembered those times when I would pick &quot;How Deep Is Your Love&quot; to sing at the karaoke. Despite not coming from the Bee Gees generation, I realized I also grew up listening to the band&#x27;s songs, and so, watching The Best of the Bee Gees Show gave me two hours of an absolute great time, slowing down with the ballad tracks and vibin&#x27; to the more upbeat tracks.  <div> </div><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1776226472809best of bee gees newport 1.jpg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/></div><div> </div>The show had two sets, the first one dedicated to the band&#x27;s earlier songs and the tracks they wrote for other artists, while the second one was saved for the Saturday Night Fever album, along with disco-esque songs. Older, more mellow love songs by the Bee Gees—such as &quot;I&#x27;ve Got a Message to You,&quot; &quot;How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,&quot; &quot;Run to Me,&quot; &quot;I Started a Joke,&quot; &quot;To Love Somebody,&quot; and &quot;Massachusetts&quot;—kicked off the show.Some might not know or may not have realized that the Bee Gees also wrote songs for other legendary artists, so a part of The Best of the Bee Gees tribute show highlighted that side of their artistry. The Best of the Bee Gees performed alongside their guest singers to relive some of these iconic songs that got the audience singing along: Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton&#x27;s &quot;Islands in the Stream,&quot; Barbra Streisand&#x27;s &quot;Woman in Love,&quot; Celine Dion&#x27;s &quot;Immortality,&quot; and Diana Ross&#x27; &quot;Chain Reaction.&quot;In between that segment, Nick also performed &quot;Closer Than Close,&quot; one of the songs by his father, Maurice Gibb, while Debora took the stage with &quot;First of May.&quot; Nick, Debora, and the Best of the Bee Gees then sang &quot;Too Much Heaven&quot; altogether. Debora took the moment to share some of her favorite memories with her uncles, noting how amazing it was for them to have been included in one of the beach scenes in the music video of &quot;Too Much Heaven&quot; while on a family vacation. She also took the opportunity to pay tribute to the Bee Gees&#x27; younger brother, Andy Gibb, sharing, &quot;We had a big adventure day out to Orlando, Florida, where we did Disney World, and it was during this day at Disney World, that it really impacted on me as a 10-year-old just how famous Andy had become. Everywhere we went, people stopped him for photographs, autographs, and he was incredibly gracious with his time, completely humbled by the attention, and gave every single person his time. He was such a beautiful person, and he was incredibly shy about all of this but very, very much humbled. But it is with the music that we are sharing with you tonight that the memory of Andy, Robin, Barry, and Maurice will never leave us. The next segment was like a party, as The Best of Bee Gees encouraged everyone to stand up and dance along to the disco tracks. But before the theater turned into a party place, Evan Webster took everyone to the moment they became The Best of the Bee Gees: &quot;We were a little cover band playing all sorts of music, and a young lady came up to us, and asked us to play at their wedding. She wanted a particular song for the bridal walk, which had to be a Bee Gees song. So, we thought, we&#x27;d do the gig, and we learned the song, played at the wedding, and everything went well, so we thought, &#x27;Well, we could sing those harmonies; let&#x27;s do another one and another one, and another one,&#x27; and back then, 28 years ago, we becam The Best of the Bee Gees.&quot;<div> </div><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1776234870868best of bee gees newport 4.jpg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/> </div>Then they performed the song that started it all for them from the Saturday Night Fever album: &quot;How Deep Is Your Love.&quot; And I felt giddy, hearing this amazing band perform one of my favorite throwback songs—I couldn&#x27;t help but sing my heart out! The Best of the Bee Gees, along with Roslyn, livened up the night with tracks from the album: &quot;Boogie Shoes,&quot; &quot;More Than a Woman,&quot; &quot;Night Fever,&quot; &quot;Disco Inferno,&quot; and &quot;You Should Be Dancing.&quot; The group concluded the fun, nostalgic night with &quot;Stayin&#x27; Alive,&quot; a perfect track to wrap up a tribute show that aimed to keep the Bee Gees&#x27; songs alive today and for many more years to come.
