Toy Story 5 Movie Review

<div><em></em><em>Toy Story 5</em><em> is a fun movie about tablet kids that&#x27;s made for adults who grew up with Buzz and Woody. But regardless of one’s legal age, it’s hard not to enjoy it with or without the benefit of nostalgia glasses. It’s fun, funny, and, as always, filled with lots of heart.</em></div><div><br/></div><p>It’s been more than 30 years since the first<strong><em> Toy Story</em></strong> movie, and 1995 feels like a lifetime ago. So many things have changed, and even our idea of playtime seems like such a foreign concept to our kids.</p><p>Thus, the premise of <strong><em>Toy Story 5</em></strong> is pretty simple: in the age of 6-7 memes, where do our toys and imaginary friends fit in? </p><p><em>Toy Story 5 </em>begins as we continue from where we left off in <em>TS4</em>: <strong>Forky</strong> is getting married to <strong>Karen Beverly</strong> a.k.a. the plastic knife toy created by <strong>Bonnie</strong>. <strong>Jessie</strong>, <strong>Buzz</strong>, and the gang are all here, and somebody has poisoned one of the wedding guests. The usual stuff. She’s been having a hard time making friends because her idea of playing with toys is not like her peers. Bonnie feels alienated. And so her parents come to the decision that, maybe, she can connect (and make friends) with other kids faster by using a gadget, more specifically, the tablet called <strong>Lilypad</strong>.</p><p><strong></strong>Jessie<strong></strong>, now the de facto leader of the group since <strong>Woody</strong>’s departure, believes Bonnie just needs to find similar-minded kids to hang out and play with. Lily, the tablet, believes toys are obsolete and it’s much easier to make friends with gadgets. And through some techie-finagling, Lily manages to score a sleepover with the girls in Bonnie’s dance class.</p><p>Bonnie is excited. Jessie is excited. Buzz is excited. All the toys are excited. Nervous but excited. But little do they know, making connections online is one thing; building friendship IRL is another.</p><div><br/></div><div><iframe class="instagram-media instagram-media-rendered" id="instagram-embed-2" src="https://www.instagram.com/p/DZhkhaTE4I-/embed/?cr=1&amp;v=14&amp;wp=864&amp;rd=https%3A%2F%2Fod2-workbench-web.abs-cbn.com&amp;rp=%2F#%7B%22ci%22%3A2%2C%22os%22%3A691680.7000000179%7D" allowtransparency="true" allowfullscreen="" frameBorder="0" height="881" data-instgrm-payload-id="instagram-media-payload-2" scrolling="no" style="background:white;max-width:540px;width:calc(100% - 2px);border-radius:3px;border:1px solid rgb(219, 219, 219);box-shadow:none;display:block;margin:0px 0px 12px;min-width:326px;padding:0px"></iframe></div><script async="" src="//www.instagram.com/embed.js"></script><div><br/></div><p>To the surprise of no one, <em>TS5</em> is very funny and visually amazing. <strong>Joan Cusack</strong> as Jessie takes the lead for most of the movie and does her best to carry most of the story on her (and Bulleye’s) shoulders. </p><p>Watching<strong> Tim Allen a</strong>s Buzz Lightyear and<strong> Tom Hanks </strong>as Woody on screen feels like seeing an old friend after a long time. Though they are not as prominent on screen compared to other <em>TS</em> movies, the current Buzz and Woody fit their roles well and don’t feel like afterthoughts. One might say that Buzz even got updated. Wink, wink.</p><p>And speaking of funny, <strong>Conan O&#x27;Brien</strong> as <strong>Smarty Pants </strong>just steals the show in every scene he is in. He is perfect as a talking potty-training gadget/toy, and it’s hard to imagine <strong>P</strong><strong>ixar</strong> having any other actor in mind to deliver such witty puns and one-liners. Then, tug at the heartstrings towards the finale before wrapping everything in a cute cartoon bouquet, making you forget about your gadget, even for just a little bit.</p><p>If I had to pinpoint the biggest difference between<em> Toy Story 5 </em>and the previous <em>TS</em> films, though, it’s the subtle change of giving more screentime to Bonnie. Compared to previous <em>TS</em> films, though, she has a bigger role in the story. The <em>TS5</em> Bonnie is not as passive as Andy, who, in the <em>TS</em> films, occasionally just appears to make us cry.</p><p>And it’s this creative choice that makes one think that <em>TS5</em> is more for parents than their kids. Without giving anything away, <em>TS5</em> is a nice reminder that you were once that weird little kid and your weird little kid is gonna be okay.</p><p>In the end, the most amazing thing about the <em>Toy Story</em> franchise is its unbelievable longevity. Most of the kids who saw the first film in 1995 are now, most likely, parents who have little kids of their own.
