<p>Fathers are notorious for their cheesy Dad jokes. You know, the kind that embarrass their children, producing the eye rolls and sighs of utter disgust at how uncool and corny these jokes are. Typically, they’ll be like, ‘What did the nose say to the finger? Stop picking on me!’ And if you’re grinning from ear to ear or stifling a laugh right now, then welcome to the Daddy Club.</p><div> <span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px;display:block" width="960"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1781942419341Metro.Style Chef Josh Xiaomi Daddyokie Ogie Alcasid.png" style="width:960px;display:block;height:auto" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/><span class="fr-inner">Ogie Alcasid with the full band for DADDYOKIE</span></span></span></div><p>As Ogie Alcasid was candid enough to admit during the opening night of his Daddyokie concert series at the Proscenium Theater, Rockwell Center, Makati, Father’s Day is like the leftover celebration after Mother’s Day—which is the occasion everyone really pulls out all the stops for. So it’s left to the likes of Daddy Ogie to make something of this Father’s Day weekend, via a collection of songs and jokes that hit us like a brisk shot of welcome nostalgia. As he mentioned, since Filipinos are so fond of karaoke and videoke, they coined the word as the title of his concerts: DADDYOKIE.</p><div> <span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px;display:block" width="960"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1781942513860image0.jpeg" style="width:960px;display:block;height:auto" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/><span class="fr-inner">Ogie Alcasid </span></span></span></div><p>As Ogie went on to explain, the evening’s concert was structured to touch base with the different generations of fathers: starting with the baby boomers, and moving on to the Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z young dads. And to get things moving, the audience loved his opening medley of Kenny Loggins songs, “Footloose” and “Heart to Heart.”</p><p>To officially welcome the baby boomers, songs from the Carpenters, and Rupert Holmes’ “Terminal” were trotted out, with the lyrics flashed on a screen so that the whole Proscenium Theater turned into a sing-along party. To heighten this sing-along aspect, Ogie even called to the stage three dads, whose wives had volunteered them to join Ogie.</p><div><br/></div><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px;display:block" width="960"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1781942759684image1.jpeg" style="width:960px;display:block;height:auto" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/><span class="fr-inner">Ogie with Karylle</span></span></span></div><p>Songs such as “It Might Be You” by Stephen Bishop, and James Ingram’s “Just Once” were clear crowd pleasers. For the Gen X Dads, songs like APO’s “You Gave Me A Reason” were performed, and to sing one of Ogie’s own compositions, Karylle was brought on stage as the night’s first guest. Even if under the weather, Karylle was great and was warmly received. Lani Misalucha was the second guest artist called to the stage, and her voice is as pristine as ever. A collection of uptempo party songs followed, heralded by the Spinners’ “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love.”</p><div><br/></div><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dii" style="width:960px;display:inline-block" width="960"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/17819436293191781943628220.jpeg" style="width:960px" id="isPasted" class="fr-fic fr-dii" width="960"/><span class="fr-inner">Ogie with his son Nate </span></span></span></div><div><br/></div><p>My highlight of the night was Ogie calling his son with Regine—Nate—to the stage, and performing two songs: “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles, and “Father &amp; Son” by Cat Stevens/Yusuf. If genetic material is a guarantee of musical talent, then the combination of Regine Velasquez and Ogie Alcasid should be the portent of a great future for Nate, and he seems to be a really good kid.</p><div><br/></div><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px;display:block" width="960"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1781943666643image4.jpeg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/><span class="fr-inner">Ogie and Regine Velasquez</span></span></span></div><p>Ogie then spoke about Yacht Rock, a term now used by the young kids to describe the music of the 1980’s and 1990’s: Doobie Brothers, Christopher Cross, Loggins and Messina, Steely Dan, and Toto being some examples of yacht rock musicians. Songs of this era followed, and they brought the crowd to their feet.</p><p>The ‘last but not least’ musical guest to join Ogie on one number was no other than the aforementioned Regine Velasquez. This was really sweet, as she had been happily watching as part of the audience until called to the stage. Gifting Regine with a bouquet, Ogie even joked that he knew the flowers would end up with his mother-in-law.</p><div><br/></div><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px;display:block" width="960"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1781943727823image5.jpeg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/><span class="fr-inner">Ogie Alcasid joins the audience</span></span></span></div><p>A video clip of Ogie singing a karaoke “My Way” with his late father was one of the truly touching moments of the night, as Ogie reminisced on how the Paul Anka-penned song was a big favorite of his father, who passed away during the COVID-19 health crisis.</p><p>There was truly something electric and special about the night, so I’m hoping it’s replicated on the second night; as this first night truly had people leaving the theater with big smiles plastered on their faces.</p><p>Happy Father’s Day weekend, world!</p><div><br style="caret-color:rgb(0, 0, 0);color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"/></div>
