Keeping Us In The Lup-us
A chronic autoimmune disease that primarily afflicts women, Lupus (SLE - Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) is incurable and to this day, not much is understood about what causes it. In fact, as the ones afflicted often still look fine, it's not even a disease that's easily detected. But as the ones who are afflicted will relate, it attacks the healthy tissues, and turns one's life into one of constant monitoring and close attention for the 'flaring' of symptoms.
Pop star Selena Gomez, actress Kristen Johnston, singers Toni Braxton and Seal are among the more famous personalities who suffer from Lupus. Here in the Philippines, Rep. Emmeline Aglipay-Villar, wife of Sec. Mark Villar, harnessed her personal experience with SLE, and set up the Hope for Lupus Foundation to promote public awareness, early detection, and the proper treatment of the disease.

She launched the Foundation November of 2016; and just last Sunday, January 21st, the Hope for Lupus Run was held at the MOA Grounds. Presented by the CCIP (Chamber of Cosmetics Industry of the Philippines), Ever Bilena, SM MOA, & Vista Land; it was the first time the Run was held and I was encouraged by the very strong show of support, impressed by the fantastic turn out.

There were 21k, 10k, and 5k courses, and so the ones suffering from Lupus wouldn't feel left out, a special 1k march course was also set up. But it was the spirit of camaraderie and running for a cause that bonded all the participants that early morning. Me, I abhor early mornings, and shy away from Running - give me the stop and go of Tennis anytime - but I was happy I made it, as being counted for this very worthy advocacy overrode all other things.
