Let The Bidding Begin
As I write this, the 2pm Auction Session of Leon Gallery Online 7 should be at fever pitch. It’s the 7th incarnation of this particular ‘animal’ that Leon Gallery has forged onto the local Art community and so far, it’s been a runaway success each time. Given how the Art world has stirred up such interest across a broad cross section of Philippine Society over the last few years, I like to think of these online auctions as the one leading the charge in democratising the process of art acquisition.

A Joya for Leon Online 7
One registers at www.leonexchange.com, and your bids also go through said site. This weekend, it’s the treasures of the Legarda Mansion that are going under the digital hammer. It’s an estate auction sale that promises to yield some very worthy art pieces, and this is just the icing on the cake. Earlier in the week, a preview was held to afford selected guests an opportunity to view in person the various artworks and objets d’art that are part of Online 7—Botong Francisco, Arturo Luz, Cesar Buenaventura, Amorsolo, Joys, Sanso, Malang - they were all represented in the amassed pieces. And while we can admit that the really major pieces were part of an auction earlier in the year, you can’t discount the fact that these names are still worth the price of admission.
Among the bigger guns of Online 7
And I say ‘democratise’ because; let’s face it, when we head to the big Art Fairs that now form part of the annual cultural calendar, most of us arrive only to find that most of the pieces of real interest have already been pre-sold before the exhibit opens. It’s like we’re told Just Admire! For those who had hopes of acquiring, unless you were part of the prescreened ‘crowd’ of notable buyers, you’ve already been Checkmated without you’re even knowing.
It’s Online Auctions such as these that still hold promise to those who want to jumpstart their collecting, or wish to dabble from the comfort of their homes.
