Tanghalang Pilipino Productions Are Coming To iWant This Month
Celebrate Independence Day by watching ‘Lam-ang,’ ‘Mabining Mandirigma,’ and more
Freelance workers of the performing arts and live events industries have been stricken hard by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. To aid displaced artists, Tanghalang Pilipino, the resident theater company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, has launched Pantawid ng Tanghalan. The initiative aims to help “sustain the company’s commitment in providing the public with artistically-excellent and socially-relevant productions” through donations.
Throughout the quarantine, many creators and producers have released their work for free: this includes several CinemaOne films on YouTube, a new production from the National Theatre each week, and recorded performances of plays and musicals. While Tanghalang Pilipino has released snippets of their successful staging of Mabining Mandirigma, as well as two monovlogs by Layeta Bucoy, they have partnered with iWant to stream six more shows this month.
“This partnership fortifies a strong future for the entire performing arts industry in the digital landscape,” says Tanghalang Pilipino artistic director, Nanding Josef. “And we’re so glad that Tanghalang Pilipino is at the forefront of that movement.”
The six productions set to stream on iWant are highly successful ethno-epic musical Lam-ang; the steampunk musical Mabining Mandirigma; Shakespeare translations Coriolano, Pangarap sa Isang Gabi ng Gitnang Tag-Araw, and Der Kaufmann; and the hit children’s musical Sandosenang Sapatos.
The shows will stream from June 12 to July 12.
