Bookworm In Your Ear: Porn Again And A Rook Resurrection

Two novels perfect for those long weekends or excursions out-of-town. One, a domestic comedy/drama; the other a fantasy thriller.

Mrs. Fletcher by Tom Perrotta

From the author who gave us the novels Election and a Little Children (both were given memorable film treatments); here is his latest ‘parable’ about modern life and growing up and old. At the center of Perrotta’s story is a mother-son tandem. She’s a recent single mom whose husband left her to create a new family with his girlfriend; while the son has graduated from a high school and is about to embark on his big college adventure. The mother discovers on line porn of the MILF variety and it becomes an addiction; while the son is out to turn his college life into one big and long party. It’s the world of our next door neighbours given a veneer that suddenly turns their lives into enthralling reading; as Perrotta piles up incidents and developments from way out left field. Wonderful!

Stiletto by Daniel O’Malley

For those who have read O’Malley’s first novel Rook; all I have to say is more of the same, but with exciting twists and a shift of focus when it comes to protagonists—and they’ll know this is a must pick up book. For those unfamiliar, we initiated will actually envy as you ‘discover’ this Rook world. It’s like you took the concept of X-Men but turned them into a clandestine Her Majesty’s Secret Service; and wrote the novel in a style that’s humorous, irreverent, and cheeky. Rather than have Rook Myfawny Thomas as the sole center of the story; we now have Pawn Felicity, and a young Grafter girl, become the Thelma and Louise of this labyrinthine tale. And I mention these twists & turns in a good way, as delicious surprises lurk throughout the novel. Crying for a film treatment!
