Ortigas Art Festival Workshops and Demonstration

This award-winning art festival is back at it again on its third-year! This year, the exhibition will be designed by Mr. Renato Habulan, a very well-respected figure in social realism. To prepare for this festival, seven free workshops will be offered at the Estancia mall, in which two of these workshops are scheduled for this weekend. On February 8, a decorative painting class, while on February 9, a stencilling class. Both workshops are set to be led by Maria Carmen Prieto. ART

Peter Zimmermann's "Cross/Linked"

Modeka Space

If you're in the mood for some contemplation, abstract art will give you the jump off point for expanding your horizons. Our suggestion? Head out to Modeka Creative Space to see German artist Peter Zimmerman. In Cross/Linked, he explores the "visual effects of form and material through multi-layered compositions of colors and shapes" through his use of pigmented epoxy resin and acrylic on canvas. His method is quite complex—he first digitally manipulates book covers and found images, then enlarges them, blends, and transforms them into un-recognizable objects. This, according to his artist statement, brings about tones of Modernist Color Field painters, where emotions, meanings, and intentions are conveyed in plain sight. 

His art has been displayed in venues such as Galerie Michael Janssen in Germany and Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in Paris; while some of his pieces may be found in numerous collections, including the MoMA in New York, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain, the Neue Galerie Graz in Austria, the Museum of Fine Arts in Bost, the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art, and the New Orleans Museum of Modern Art. 

Stage Kiss

Welcome this weekend with Repertory Philippines’ production of Stage Kiss. Awarded as the Critic’s Pick in 2014 by the New York Times, the protagonist, who took a long hiatus, goes back to acting and finds out that her onstage lover is actually her real life ex-lover. Under My Skin

It turns out you can teach an old dog new tricks! The internship, starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn is proof of that. They find themselves at a prestigious internship in Google, where they must compete with tech nerds who are 10 years their junior. Mary Queen of Scots

Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie star in this retelling of the rivalry between Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I. Mary, Queen of Scots is not your average royal. She became the Queen of Scotland at 6 days old, the Queen of France at the age of 16 and was soon widowed at the age of 18. After being away from her native land, Scotland, she finally returns home to reclaim her throne. With her strong claim to the English throne, she soon becomes rivals with her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. Only one queen can rule in this patriarchal society and only one can survive. Inspired by a true family, Instant Family, starring Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne in this moving family comedy movie that touches your heart in more ways than one. Pete and Elle Wagner never really planned on having kids, but a sudden epiphany to become foster parents turns their whole world upside down. They find themselves to be the foster parents of Lizzy, Juan and Lita and they must learn how to raise these kids, even with their complicated pasts. Pete and Elle need to learn the ropes of parenthood and raising children in the hope of providing them a safe and stable home, as well as becoming a happy family. Starring the iconic love team, Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo. Jackie Serrano (Kathryn Bernardo) is rebellious and angsty, which forces her mother to send her to Tarlac for a medical mission, in hopes of her change in attitude. While in Tarlac, she meets Kiko (Daniel Padilla) who keeps her on the right path and makes sure she accomplishes all her tasks. Isa Pa with Feelings

Starring Maine Mendoza and Carlo Aquino, this romance movie is the first Filipino film to translate to sign language. Marra Navarro (Maine Mendoza) learns sign language to help her communicate with her niece who is deaf. Due to an unfortunate career setback, Marra became depressed and quickly became friends with her deaf sign language tutor Gali Pastrano (Carlo Aquino). Their unlikely friendship soon blossomed into love, but this causes Marra anxiety, because she questions whether she can have a serious long-term relationship with someone who is deaf. The Crown

Loosely based on a true story about England’s longest reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II. This Netflix original series focuses on Queen Elizabeth and her reign over England. Journey with her as she experiences the trials and tribulations of being a queen while balancing the needs of her family, her monarchy and her own personal wants. Claire Foy manages to capture the essence of the queen, perfectly and her acting was just brilliant. This drama follows her life and the events that shaped the latter of the 20th century. In a small town in Connecticut, Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter Rory are fiercely independent and are the perfect mother daughter duo. These Gilmore girls are witty with their banter and have an unbreakable bond that is tested throughout the series. Gilmore girls is good for any mood and time of the day and your addiction for this show will be as bad as Lorelai’s addiction to coffee! This wholesome TV show brings you back to the early 2000s and leaves you wanting more. Gilmore girls can be streamed on Netflix. —CTY

Parenthood

Get ready to cry your eyes out and reach for the tissues all weekend because of this big, dysfunctional, and loving family. Following the lives of the Braverman family, Sarah Braverman uproots the lives of her children and decides to move back home with her parents. The Bravermans are not your average family, they face many struggles and still manage to support each other through thick and thin. This Is Us

This dramedy follows the lives of the Pearson family: Jack, Rebecca, Kate, Kevin and Randall Peason. Their parents, Jack and Rebecca must learn the ropes of raising three children, while getting over their loss of their child. The Pearson siblings are going through their own personal struggles, as well as trying to get over traumatic events that happened in their past and changed their family forever. Every character in this show has their own unique personality that blends well with the other characters. What makes this show so unique is that one can really relate to the situations of the characters and what they are going through in each stage of their life. Sex And The City

New York, four best friends and a city full of single men. What could possibly go wrong? The Handmaid’s Tale

Based on the book written by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale is about a dystopian and totalitarian society where women are second rate citizens and are treated as property of the state. In this world, birth rates are plummeting and women’s rights are non-existent. Make It With You

Starring Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil, Make It With You is currently running on ABS-CBN Channel 2, but if you want to catch up on viewing, watching on iWant (and at your own pace) is perfect for the weekend.  In this romantic drama series, Billy (Liza Soberano) is an OFW living in Croatia. She stasys in a mobile home with some Pinoy friends and other foreigners, and is juggling different gigs so she can send money home back to her family. She regularly goes on dates so she can get free meals and with the gifts she receives, she resells. Billy stumbles upon another Filipino, Gabo (Enrique Gil), and though they have different priorities in life, they found love in each other. Meteor Garden
