She Talks Asia Summit 2024 Inspires Enlightening Conversations on ‘Breaking Stereotypes’

“Have you asked yourself how inclusive are you?”

This was the question She Talks Asia Summit 2024 co-chair and broadcast journalist Karen Davila posed to an audience predominantly composed of women at the recently held summit to mark Women’s Month. The She Talks Asia Summit was co-presented by UNIQLO, Globe Telecom and G-Cash and participated by Happy Skin.

“My biggest test is always is when I look at women, what kind of friends do they have? Do they only have one type of friend? Do they all look alike, talk alike, come from the same background? It’s almost like an algorithm on Facebook. Or are you the type of person who see beyond the extraordinary? And that’s what the women’s movement is all about. Women hated that we are judged for our looks and yet we do it to each other. Don’t you like women who are more beautiful? Don’t you also make fun of women? Maybe [make fun of] that woman who doesn’t look like you but a woman who may be labelled as easy, cheap by men and you took part in it? Or have you also participated in calling ‘the dumb blonde?’ Imagine there’s a phrase ‘the dumb blonde’ that’s only for women. That’s never been given to a man,” Davila powerfully begins.

“In your workplace that propagates these stereotypes, are you that woman who is exclusive instead of inclusive? Or are you a part of women who move women out? Don’t be that woman. You have to be the better woman. And to be the better woman is a woman who loves other women too,” the first ever She Talks Asia Summit co-chair says. Karen addressed the significance of breaking stereotypes and challenging destructive biases today against women and more importantly, to be a woman for fellow women.

She Talks Asia Asia co-founders Bianca Gonzalez-Intal, Iza Calzado-Wintle and Lynn Pinugu spearheaded this year’s summit which centered on breaking barriers and redefining narratives to empower women to thrive in today’s society and create one that’s inclusive and fair.

Bianca shared her thoughts to Metro.Style about this year’s theme.

“It was our first ever Summit Co-Chair Karen Davila who suggested this theme, and we were all immediately on board. Karen has been a long-time mentor to me and my co-founder Lynn. We all have a shared belief that stereotypes and biases are all barriers to women achieving their most authentic, most powerful selves. We felt it was an important issue to get out there, to get more women unlearning unconscious biases, and pushing forward the conversation on women empowerment,” Bianca states.

Forner Vice President and Atty. Leni Robredo served as She Talks Asia Summit 2024’s guest of honor as she talked about ways to challenge patriarchy and machismo in leadership and what it means to be female in the world of governance and power.

“As a leader, we [at the Office of the Vice President] were big on immersion. It’s one way of understanding what we need to do. Ang resulta when you immerse yourself on the ground and you see the difficulties being experienced by our people, you realize that the noise around you doesn’t matter anymore. Kasi ito iyong tao na nangangailangan ng tulong natin. You also realize na there is no help that’s too small. Kasi kahit konti lang maitutulong mo, malaking bagay iyon sa matutulungan mo,” Atty. Robredo shares.

“It is true that perhaps what you’re doing is so small that it cannot change the world but what you are doing can change a person’s life and that in itself is big. Whatever power, whatever strength you have will change a life,” the Angat Buhay President explains, inspiring women to use their power for good.

The inspiring roster of speakers at the summit included actress Eugene Domingo, photographer Shaira Luna, motivational speaker Larra Francesca Lassam, G-Cash executive Gilda Maquilan, Uniqlo executive Georgette Barrera-Jalasco, professional creative Denise Oyog, host and creator Ai Dela Cruz, food content creator Abi Marquez and more. The event covered topics on breaking stereotypes of power and on women, on breaking barriers and celebrating freedom, breaking the victim mindset, breaking stereotypes women have about finance, redefining authenticity and breaking stereotypes on love.

Asked about the experience of choosing the speakers for this year's summit, Bianca admitted it was challenging but also found the efforts put into it so worth it.

“Tiring and inspiring! We knew we had to have a good mix in terms of background, experience, and age. With intergenerational wisdom being a major pillar in our core beliefs, we knew we wanted to learn from women of all ages, also breaking the stereotype that wisdom only comes from those who are older than us—because we all have something to bring to the table whatever age we are,” she thoughtfully declares. It’s having a community and collective sense of purpose with fellow women that inspire Bianca and her co-founders to continue their work at She Talks Asia.

“Supportive and safe spaces like this didn’t exist when I was growing up, and looking back, teenage or 20-year-old me definitely could have benefitted from being part of a tribe of women like She Talks Asia. I believe in becoming the person I needed when I was younger, and this is what I hope to do with my work with She Talks Asia, and with Paano Ba ‘To and even UN Women Philippines,” Bianca tells Metro.Style.

UNIQLO, which also co-presented the event, affirms She Talks Asia’s initiative in holding such events.

“UNIQLO has always been committed to supporting women's empowerment. She Talks Asia's Summit for Women's Month with the theme ‘Breaking Stereotypes’ aligns with the brand's value of empowering all types of women to break through societal expectations on how women should navigate their lives. UNIQLO believes that engaging in such conversations is essential to drive positive change in the society, particularly towards women,” Georgette Barerra-Jalasco, UNIQLO Vice President for Marketing, remarks.

With She Talks Asia successfully concluding this year’s summit, Bianca is optimistic that this will help impact women who had the privilege to learn from the inspiring speakers and from the brave theme.

“We hope that this year’s summit inspired women to challenge the biases and boxes being imposed on them, that it empowers women to stand up for other women, and that it opens more women’s minds to the limitless possibilities of what and who they can become, “ the She Talks Asia co-founder concludes.
