This Is How Marikina City Celebrates Love

An excited crowd gathers in the Marikina Sports Center to celebrate the Pride March

In comparison to the 8,000 attendees of last year’s #HereTogether Pride March, this year’s Pride March raked in the largest number of participants, with an estimated 25,000 attendees. This year’s theme, #RiseUpTogether is a call to action for unity, to push for LGBTQ rights in the law, and to effectively advocate gender equality.

Marcelino Teodoro, the Marikina City Mayor, gave the welcoming speech for the event, while also acknowledging the presence and contributions of LAGABALAB LGBT Pilipinas, a nationwide “network of Filipino LGBTQ organizations, individuals, and allies that seek to advance and protect the human rights and basic freedoms of the Filipino LGBTQ community, with special focus on legislation and policy making.”

It is also worth noting that some anti-gay groups and organization also came to express their disapproval for the said event, stating that this is opposing Christian values. Members of religious groups present in the march have urged the LGBTQ community to repent and turn away from homosexuality. Footage of a man holding a Bible, and professing the unacceptable nature of homosexuality in religious doctrine, has since been spread all over Facebook.

Despite the commotion, the event was still successful as people sported their colorful apparel, waved their rainbow flags and spread their word of acceptance. Because, truly, love wins.
