Time To Indulge Our Collective Guilty Pleasure: The Air Supply Musical Debuts In Manila This October
The 80s was defined by several notable pop artists, including Madonna, Michael Jackson, Sting, [The Artist Formerly Known As] Prince, and various rock, disco, and pop bands.
One of these memorable bands is Air Supply.
Known for their crooning soft rock melodies and broad-range vocals, the Australian duo of Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock became a fan favorite on the airwaves with their powerful ballads that often sung of new and pained romances. As the decades moved on, their music remained a staple amongst local listeners, because of its simple ability to dredge up fond memories of the band’s heyday AND still deliver a relevant message when it comes to one’s own romantic aspirations. Also, it still sounds good.
Now, All Out of Love, a new musical honoring the timeless songs of Air Supply, will launch in October at Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila.
The musical is a contemporary romantic comedy written by award-winning Canadian playwright Jim Millan and directed by Darren Yap. It will feature 17 beloved Air Supply songs, including "Lost in Love", "Every Woman In The World", "The One That You Love", "You are the Reason", and the title track, "All Out of Love."
In the story, music mogul Tommy King is fighting to save his record company from bankruptcy by convincing rock star Jamie Crimson to go on a world tour to promote his new album. However, Jamie is at a personal crossroads after having broken up with his songwriting partner and lover Rayne, while Tommy is battling with his own heartbreak from losing his wife and dealing with his estranged daughter.
Will both King and Crimson be able to overcome their respective storms to rebuild their musical careers and keep King’s company afloat? Of course, the more intiguing aspect of this poignant tale is how they will manage to pull it off.
In a nutshell, All Out of Love is an emotional journey between two men in the same profession, as told through the music of Air Supply.
“We have always had such great support from our Filipino fans, Manila is definitely the right city to launch the show! We’re very excited!” says songwriter Graham Russell in a brief interview.
Producer Dale Harrison also acknowledges the group’s solid Filipino fanbase. “Air Supply were the first western group to tour China, Taiwan, and many other countries. With the world premiere in Manila, All Out of Love the Musical will continue the tradition of breaking new ground.”
If you grew up listening to and loving Air Supply, this is your chance to listen to your beloved tracks once more onstage, in a performance that is likely to melt your heart. Time to reminisce and fall in love again!
All Out of Love stars Filipino artists Rachel Alejandro, Mig Ayesa, Jamie Wilson, Tanya Manalang, and Raymund Concepcion. It will run for only 12 performances, from 18 to 28 October, 2018. Tickets are prices from P1,800 to P4,500, and may be purchased via TicketWorld.
