These Are The Emmy Nominated Shows You Need To Check Out, If You’re Tired of ‘Stranger Things’ or ‘The Crown’
Plus, which ones you can binge and finish just in time for the ceremony!
This year’s Emmys will be one of the first U.S.-based awards shows to take place in real time since the lockdown started, set to give us a glimpse into what live events will look like in a post-pandemic world.
This past June, many of us tuned into the socially-distanced 56th Baeksang Arts Awards; as did we for the pre-recorded MTV Video Music Awards in which Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande performed a medley of songs from Chromatica—wearing masks that complemented their outfits, of course. At the recently concluded American Country Music Awards, the performers, from Carrie Underwood to Taylor Swift, sang to empty seats at various locations in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Emmys, on the other hand, will be a completely virtual experience, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, and it’s set to take place on Monday, September 21 at 8 a.m. Manila time. HBO’s Watchmen and Amazon Prime’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel take the lead for the shows with the most nominations.
We’ve rounded up the shows you should check out, beyond Stranger Things and The Crown. Find out where you can watch them, and which ones you can binge over the weekend and finish just in time for the ceremony.

Watchmen (HBO Go)
Watchmen is based on 1986 comic of the same name, and takes place 34 years after the events in the comics. Set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Watchmen follows two police officers who become masked vigilantes, in an attempt to crack down on a white supremacist group called the Seventh Kavalry. Can it be binged in one weekend? Yes—there are nine episodes, each an hour long.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon Prime)
This critical darling, brought to you by Amy Sherman-Palladino of Gilmore Girls, tells the story of Midge, a housewife from the late 1950s who discovers a hidden talent for stand-up comedy, which changes her life. Can it be binged in one weekend? Sort of, if you get really into it. There are three seasons with around 8 episodes each.
Succession (HBO Go)
The darkly funny Succession follows the Roy family and the media empire they own, Waystar Royco, led by founder and patriarch Logan Roy. A lot of the cast members are in the running for acting awards, and the show itself is nominated for an Emmy! Can it be binged in one weekend? It’ll be a little tough, unless you want to spend 20 consecutive hours with the Roys.
Dead to Me (Netflix)
Dead to Me follows Jen and Judy, played by Emmy nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, as they form an unlikely and unexpected friendship following the death of Jen’s husband. Can it be binged in one weekend? That’s absolutely doable, as there are currently two seasons with ten half-hour episodes each.
The Good Place (Netflix)
While the fourth and final season of The Good Place still isn’t on Netflix, you can check out its first three seasons, following Eleanor Shellstrop, a woman who finds herself in “the Good Place,” after her death. The show tackles philosophy and ethics in the span of a half-hour comedy, led gloriously by Emmy nominee Ted Danson. Can it be binged in one weekend? Absolutely!
The Morning Show (Apple TV+)
The Morning Show, nominated for acting and directing, is one of Apple TV+’s flagship shows, and follows Jennifer Aniston’s Alex Levy, an anchor at a popular breakfast news program. Can it be binged in one weekend? Yes; there are 10 episodes running up to 70 minutes.
Unbelievable (Netflix)
Unbelievable follows Marie, a young woman who’s been raped but is charged with lying about having been raped, and detectives Grace Rasmussen and Karen Duvall, two detectives who end up finding out about the truth. Can it be binged in one weekend? Absolutely—this 8-episode show’s pacing, among other things, is incredible.
