What We Know About Nickelodeon’s Newest Venture, Avatar Studios
Its first project is an animated film, and its goal is to create more content within the ‘Avatar’ universe
This week, the original creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra announced that they are set to lead Nickelodeon’s newest venture, Avatar Studios, as co-chief creative officers.
Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko announced the exciting news on their Facebook pages, alongside ViacomCBS’ Investor Day presentation.
The studio’s first project will be an animated film slated to start production this 2021.
In a statement, the creators said: “It’s hard to believe it’s been 19 years since we created Avatar: The Last Airbender. But even after all that time, there are still many stories and time periods in Aang’s world that we are eager to bring to life. We are fortunate to have an ever-growing community of passionate fans that enjoys exploring the Avatarverse as much as we do.”
Avatar: The Last Airbender follows a 12-year-old monk named Aang, who is destined to be the Avatar and master the four elements in order to save the world from the Fire Nation. It originally ran on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008, and was followed by a sequel: The Legend of Korra, which picks up after the end of Aang’s story, and follows the next Avatar, a young teen named Korra.
This reveal accompanied the announcement of Paramount+, ViacomCB’s upcoming streaming platform, which is set to launch on March 4.
As a newly-established Avatar fan in the midst of watching The Legend of Korra, having just finished Avatar: The Last Airbender, I myself cannot wait for a dedicated series on the life and times of Avatar Kyoshi.
