WATCH: The Manila Philharmonic Orchestra’s Commemorative 25th Anniversary Concert

The 80-piece orchestra will be composed of current and previous orchestra members

When thinking of musical excellence in homegrown talent, the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) is likely one of the first names that comes to mind. Its founder and music director, Maestro Rodel Colmenar, will take the lead during their anticipated 25th anniversary concert: "Lights, Camera, Encore.”

The concert will take place on October 29, 7 p.m. at The Samsung Performing Arts Theater, Ayala Malls Circuit Makati. In line with celebrating the MPO’s years of moving melodies, it is only apt to take a look at the orchestra’s beginnings.

The Journey

Colmenar founded the MPO in the late 90s with the primary goal of showcasing the symphony to audiences in the country. With world-class performances of both classical pieces and contemporary favorites alongside local and international names—from Broadway icon Lea Salonga to jazz-pop artist Laufey—the orchestra has no doubt soared to heights never before imagined.

The music conductor recounted the beginnings of the MPO, beginning as a “sideline gig” and morphing into “a cornerstone of the Philippine music scene”. In 25 years, the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra has more than solidified itself as a premiere group. But perhaps one of the most touching parts of their story is how their supporters have grown with them throughout the years.

“We have had clients who have been with us from the very beginning,” says Colmenar, “especially during our Philharmonic in Jeans concert series in the 90s.” He says that during that time, there was a couple who had been dating. They told him of their wish for the MPO to play at their wedding. “That wish came true,” says the MPO founder. The orchestra has played in many similar personal milestone events—including baptisms and debuts. At this point, Colmenar gratefully considers these clients, their loyal supporters, as friends.

The Expectations

With a repertoire of more than two decades, what can the orchestra’s long-time supporters expect at the concert? Musical themes from beloved soundtracks along with Broadway favorites are only some of the pieces that audiences can look forward to.

It’s quite a feat to be able to still somehow keep the musicality fresh even after all these years. How are they able to keep things interesting? Colmenar credits it to being able to brainstorm new ideas. Sometimes, they’ll go with creating new arrangements or using new instruments. Other times, they’ll change up the conducting techniques or explore various combinations of instruments.

“We tailor our show to what the audience wants,” says the conductor. “And it’s not just hopping on trends for us. It’s about connecting with any and every kind of audience and giving them the best shows possible.”

With a setlist packed with tracks from popular pieces like Hamilton, Star Wars, and even Studio Ghibli, audiences will surely find their favorites in the show. These will be performed by both current and former MPO members—an astounding 80-piece orchestra. Guests like Bituin Escalante and the Philippine Madrigal Singers are also some of those whom audiences can expect to see.

The Legacy

But beyond being a celebration of the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra’s 25th anniversary, it is also a celebration of artistry. Part of the proceeds of the event are set to go to PARCaralan, which helps people excel in the performing arts. “There’s so much undiscovered talent, especially in the Philippines,” says Colmenar. He says that any aspiring musician needs passion, determination, and hard work.

However, not all aspirants are privileged enough to pursue their dreams. “Our goal, together with PARC Foundation, is to support these underprivileged aspiring artists,” he says, “the kids who want to learn how to play, who want to express their artistry to the world.” After all, he himself fully believes in the power of transforming people’s lives through music.
