Song of the Week: “Try Everything” by Shakira
After a stressful January, let’s recalibrate and dance to Shakira’s “Try Everything”
Welcome to Song of the Week, Metro.Style Culture’s new weekly series where we bring you one song every week—complete with history, the best scenarios to play them in, and what to listen to next if you liked it.
“Try Everything,” Shakira
There’s no doubt about it: January’s been a stressful month. The start of the new year has been a rollercoaster of emotions, good news, and bad news. NBA legend Kobe Bryant passed away in a helicopter crash, the Philippines confirmed its first case of the novel coronavirus, and the Taal Volcano erupted, sending thousands of families fleeing. These events led to realizations about the fragility and unpredictability of life, but we mustn’t be disheartened; we mustn’t allow ourselves to sulk or be burdened by them.
This week, we suggest you listen to Shakira’s “Try Everything” and keep it in your headspace. After her explosive Superbowl Halftime Show alongside Jennifer Lopez, she’s back in people’s minds, and what better song to recalibrate to than the one she recorded for Disney’s Zootopia?
“Try Everything” features in the film as a song by a singer named Gazelle— voiced by Shakira, of course. It’s upbeat and motivational, and perfect for a fresh start or for getting out of a rut: “I messed up tonight / I lost another fight / I still mess up but I’ll just start again . . . I won’t give up, no I won’t give in / Till I reach the end / Then I’ll start again.”
The song showcases Shakira’s iconic vocals—there’s no doubt that it’s sung by her from the very first notes. At the 59th Grammy Awards, it was nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media, and debuted and peaked at number 63 on the Billboard Hot 100.
If you liked this song, listen to Jennifer Lopez’s “Jenny From The Block.”
