How To Watch All The 'Avengers' Movies In Chronological Order
Following the explosive events at Avengers: Infinity War, the post-credits hinted at the arrival of Captain Marvel, and we have been anxiously waiting since. This week, Marvel is finally releasing the first Captain Marvel film, starring Brie Larson. Set in 1995, the movie goes back in time to Captain Marvel’s origin story.
Since 2008, Marvel has released over 20 films telling the stories of the many superheroes and ultimately building up towards the pinnacle battle to take place in Avengers: Endgame, coming out in April. Most of the movies take place in present day, but were not released in chronological order. If you need a refresher and want to binge-watch all the movies before seeing the new ones, this list will show you how to follow the MCU timeline.
1. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Although not the first movie released in this franchise, Captain America’s origin story takes place during WWII when Steve Rogers is used as a test subject for an experiment.
2. Captain Marvel (2019)
The most recent movie from the MCU in cinemas tells the origin story of Captain Marvel and takes place in 1995.
3. Iron Man (2008)
The MCU movies begin to take place around the time of the movie’s release, with Iron Man’s origin story set in 2010.
4. The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Initially portrayed by Edward Norton, the Hulk's origin story is set in 2011. Norton was then replaced by Mark Ruffalo for the role of Bruce Banner in the first Avengers film.
5. Iron Man 2 (2010)
After Tony Stark publicly reveals his identity as Iron Man, the team of Avengers begins to form as S.H.I.E.L.D. director, Nick Fury approaches Stark and introduces Natasha Romanoff, also known as the Black Widow. U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, and Stark’s best friend, James “Rhodey” Rhodes takes one of Stark’s armor suits and later becomes War Machine.
6. Thor (2011)
We are introduced to Thor as the son of Odin and subsequent heir to the throne of Asgard, but he is banished to Earth when he reignites a war. Still unacquainted with S.H.I.E.L.D. at this point, Thor tries to break into one of their facilities to retrieve his hammer, and we see Hawkeye makes his first cameo in the MCU.
7. The Avengers (2012)
When Thor’s brother, Loki gets a hold of an energy cube that threatens Earth, S.H.I.E.L.D. recruits a team of superheroes, bringing Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye all together for the first time to form the Avengers.
8. Iron Man 3 (2013)
After saving New York from destruction with the Avengers, we see how Tony Stark deals with the trauma, and its effects on his life, including his relationship with Pepper Potts.
9. Thor: The Dark World (2013)
When Thor’s love interest from Earth, Jane Foster, accidentally falls into another portal and becomes infected by a mysterious force called the Aether, Thor takes her to Asgard to be treated. Capable of destroying the nine realms, the Aether was hidden by the Asgardians from the Dark Elves in the distant past, but its reappearance puts the entire universe at risk.
10. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
While trying to adjust to modern times in Washington DC, Captain America ends up joining forces with the Black Widow and a new ally, the Falcon, to uncover a conspiracy and stop an unexpected enemy.
11. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
On the run after stealing a powerful orb, Peter Quill (Star-Lord) gathers a group of misfits including Gamora, Rocket Racoon, Groot, and Dax the Destroyer to save the universe.
12. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Set in 2014 soon after the events of the first movie, the guardians accept a job from an alien race in exchange for Gimora’s sister, Nebula. After an attack on their ship forces the Guardians to crash on a nearby planet, they meet Quill’s father and befriend his empathic assistant, Mantis.
13. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
When Tony Stark’s AI peacekeeping program goes awry, Ultron is unleashed, and the robot becomes hellbent on extinguishing humanity. In this movie, we meet twins Wanda and Pietro Maximoff (Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver) for the first time, and Vision is born, expanding the Avengers.
14. Ant-Man (2015)
Ant-Man’s origin story begins when Scott Lang unknowingly steals the Ant-Man Suit from its creator and his eventual mentor, Dr Hank Pym, who resigned from S.H.I.E.L.D. in 1989.
15. Captain America: Civil War (2016)
When the government pushes for regulation on heroes’ actions, Captain America and Iron Man disagree on the matter, forcing the rest of the Avengers to take sides and go up against each other. Recruited by Iron Man, Black Panther and Spider-Man make their first appearances in the MCU.
16. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
After his experience alongside the Avengers, Peter Parker embraces his new identity as Spider-Man, but must return to his normal life as a teenager, under the instruction of his new mentor, Tony Stark.
17. Doctor Strange (2016)
Doctor Strange’s origin story began when the famous neurosurgeon, in search for a cure for his hands damaged in an accident, enters a mysterious enclave where he is tough the mystic arts.
18. Black Panther (2018)
After the death of his father, T’Challa returns to Wakanda to take his rightful place on the throne and to protect the reclusive country and its advanced technology from external threats.
19. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
While imprisoned on the other side of the universe, Thor is unexpectedly pitted against a fellow Avenger in a battle ring, and must save Asgard from the threat of an all-powerful goddess.
20. Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
Though released after Infinity War, this film presumably takes place before the third Avengers movie. Still reeling from the events of Civil War, Scott Lang is approached by Dr Hank Pym and his daughter, Hope van Dyke, who fights alongside Ant-Man as The Wasp.
21. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
An event that’s been ten years in the making, (almost) all the superheroes come together to save the planet and prevent Thanos from collecting all six Infinity Stones.
22. Avengers: Endgame (2019)
In a post-apocalyptic world, the surviving Avengers try to find a way to retrieve their allies to take down Thanos.
23. Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)
According to Marvel president, Kevin Feige, we will see Peter Parker try to return to a normal life after the dramatic events of the two preceding Avengers movie. Spoiler Alert! Looks like this sequel reveals Spider-Man's fate after the Avengers battle Thanos.
