Live-Action 'Little Mermaid': Here's Everything We Know So Far

Isn’t it neat?

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid is almost ready to start rolling. The film studio announced via Twitter that Halle Bailey of Chloe x Halle and Grown-ish fame is set to star as the fiery-haired princess. Halle will be the first woman of color to play Ariel, a role that has historically been portrayed by white actresses—the likes of Jodi Benson, Sara Bareilles, and Lea Michele.

Directed by Rob Marshall, the live-action reimagining of this Disney golden-age classic will have music by returning composer Alan Menken, who will be partnering up with Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. The duo will be incorporating songs from the original film as well new tracks for the remake.

Though the rest of the cast has yet to be confirmed, a few names have already been appearing in various reports, including Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters) for Ursula and Awkwafina (Ocean’s Eight, Crazy Rich Asians) for Scuttle.

Despite being in early talks for Ursula, Melissa seems to be facing some competition from musician Lizzo, who could also capably play the role of the sea witch. But we're sure that whoever gets cast, whether it's Melissa or Lizzo, it's going to be a fun ride.

The film is set to begin production next year.
