Mitsukoshi Is Coming To Redefine The Mall Experience This 2021
Japan treasures the shopping experience, so mall-going Filipinos are sure to love the first Mitsukoshi mall opening in Bonifacio Global City
Filipinos love malls. This, despite the growth and rise of online shopping in the country. While shopping centers in countries like the United States are on the decline, with stores filing for bankruptcy left and right, the mall is by no means a dying institution in the Philippines. SM Prime Holdings, Inc. is set to open 17 new malls outside of Metro Manila, beginning this year until 2022. Just last year, the newest wing of Estancia at Capitol Commons was opened to the public, as well as Ayala Malls Manila Bay.
Next year, in 2021, another retail behemoth is slated to entrance Filipinos with the promise of luxury shopping and dining, great deals, and curated items: Japan’s biggest department store chain, Mitsukoshi, will be opening soon in Bonifacio Global City. On its basement level, mallgoers will experience the depachika (“depāto” meaning department store and “chika” meaning basement), which houses a supermarket and a food hall.
Mitsukoshi is the oldest department store chain in Japan, declared in 1904 as Japan's first department store. Its Nihombashi main store has been declared a historical building by the Tokyo metropolitan government, with its Renaissance-style design that has stood the test of time.
Beyond this, the mall will also anchor The Seasons Residences, an upscale, Japanese-inspired condominium project, marking the brand’s 56th outlet in the world. The Residences aim to create and foster genuine Japanese community right in the heart of Metro Manila.
