It has been a little more than a year since the first season of the Netflix series The Crown wrapped up productions. The season ended on a high note, with more conflicts and personal struggles starting to arise.

The Crown's Season 2, which basically picks up from where the first season left off, is set to premiere globally on December 8 with another series of 10 brand-new episodes.

The Crown is a drama TV series that tells the biographical story of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II of  United Kingdom. The show started with the life of the Queen from her wedding in 1947 to Prince Philip up to the present day. It stars Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II, Matt Smith as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret.

The second season, which covers the period between 1956 and 1964, sees Elizabeth and Philip facing more challenges in their relationship as issues on and rumors of his infidelities are tackled. Princess Margaret (Elizabeth’s sister), meanwhile, had ended her relationship with Group Captain Peter Townsend and will be seen marrying Lord Snowdon.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Foy shared, “The first series was very much about the family and her finding her role after her father died and coming into her own, and this second series is very much about the outside world.”

This season will be the last to feature Foy, Smith, Kirby, and the rest of the cast as the story sees the characters aging, with the Queen specifically entering her late 40s up to her early 60s in seasons three and four. Foy will be replaced by Olivia Colman.

The show’s creator, Peter Morgan, envisioned the show to run for six seasons. Each season has 10 one-hour episodes, and each covers about a decade of the Queen’s reign.

Also on its second series is another show about royalty, the British drama TV series Victoria, which stars Jenna Colman as Queen Victoria. The show, created by Daisy Goodwin, details the reign of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. The first series, which ran from August 28, 2016 to October 9, 2016, had eight episodes. The second series, which premiered on August 27, 2017, will have eight episodes as well.
