Pledge To Act And Make A Difference: Get Involved With These Do-Good Teams

It’s all well and good to explore the inner sanctification part for yourself, but how about some world-changing action and commitment as well? You might consider pledging the simple act of volunteering and helping throughout the year even after the summer holidays pass.  Here are a few organizations and foundations that continue to actively make an impact in our society nationwide.

Operation Blessing

One of the smaller relief organizations often quick to respond to a social need when it arises is Operation Blessing.  Through their efforts close to 1 million people’s lives have been changed throughout the country through the supply of disaster relief, trauma counseling, and teaching.  Volunteer opportunities include being a medical worker, teacher, counselor, fundraiser photographer, writer, registration personnel, encoder, all-around assistant or any other service you might benefit their programs with.  Among the trustees on board are a few familiar faces like Angeli P. Valenciano, the wife of performing artist, Gary Valenciano, and Pastor Peter Kairuz of 700 Club Philippines.

Friends of Hope

If you’re familiar with the mineral water sold named “Hope in a Bottle” Friends of Hope is the team that spearheads nation-building programs behind that profit-generating enterprise.  Friends of Hope has two programs; classroom building and giving farmers a boost by helping make higher income possible. They’ve recognized the dire need given the nationwide classroom shortage.  Daily, thousands of Filipino students go to school without a proper classroom to shelter their learning.  In the area of agriculture, Friends of Hope’s goal is to increase the incomes of small holder coconut farmers so that Filipino families and communities can prosper.  Help them achieve their vision by purchasing the products that they sell like Hope in Bottle water and Vita Coco.

“In our case, we try to attract talents from schools across the country, many of them leading schools here in Metro Manila.” Gretchen Phillips, CEO of Friends of Hope shares how bringing in young people into the enterprise teaches them about social change through business. “What we want to do is bring in every year a class of like young students or graduates that are deeply committed to driving social change but may not yet have the skills or experience to do that.”

Gretchen goes on further to explain “What we try to do is give them emergence in business for good.So we will bring them in a sales role or marketing role, you know they will get mentorship from our team, training programs that we run internally, and our hope is that many of our staff stay with us forever.  We know that many young people these days want to go on and start their own business or do things.  We cheer them on that but we hope that Friends of Hope makes its imprint on their world view.”

Gentle Hands

At Gentle Hands, children come first.  A lot of them, from birth to their tender years, experience trauma and abuse in ways that seem irreparable, but with the help of this established welfare agency children have a chance.  Gentle Hands Inc. engages in the rescue and rehabilitation of at-risk children and youth and at present have over 65 who are in preparation for rehabilitation, adoption, or reunification.  Do you have a heart for children in need?  You may opt to volunteer with Gentle Hands to serve part-time or more regularly if you so choose.  Volunteering for Gentle Hands may prove to be a more challenging task versus working with other social welfare groups but it’s working with kids in need that will make all the difference in your own life, not just theirs.
