The Heart Of The Matter

The trend lately is to stage a flurry of live shows around Valentine's Day; and let's first make it clear that I have nothing against that. I'm happy for the performers, as there's so much talent here in the Philippines, and they don't often get the notice or earn the talent fees they richly deserve. Case in point would be Joanna Ampil, riding on the wings of her MMFF Best Actress nod for the musical film Ang Larawan, finally being wooed to headline a show here next week. She is a world-class performer and talent, duly recognized abroad, and yet relatively ignored in her own country - so I'm overjoyed to see Valentine's Day become the avenue to bring her back home.

But to be honest, I'm of the mind that on this special night, instead of placing some singer or performer at the center of our attention, I'd much rather make the person in front of me the sole Star of the Night. A relatively intimate, chill night is how I prefer to spend Valentine's Day with that special someone. So for those of like mind, here are some suggestions on where to go, what to do, and what's out there. A really nice dinner, something peaceful and with ambiance, or something tranquil is my preferred route for creating the 'fireworks'.

Edge, Discovery Primea

Insofar as the hotels are concerned; elsewhere on metro.style, Nana Ozaeta has written about the special menus several of the top hotels have created for this Day of Hearts. I'd just like to add that if you're headed to Flame at Discovery Primea for Chef Luis Chikiamco's 5 course Asian-inspired Valentine's Dinner; have some drinks first (or a nightcap) at their Edge. Or just spend the night at Edge, where their craft cocktails and custom-made savories blend with the wonderful view to spell romance with a capital R.

The Chistorra - which goes down like strong cranberry juice mixed with pineapple juice, orange bitters, and Carlos I with Absolut Kurant, was the favorite. And you have to try the Warm Salmon Nigiri - with Crispy Sushi Rice, Caramel Soy and Scallions; and the Foie Gras Macaroons - with Fig and Onion Jam.

If it's stand-alone restaurants you're after; head to Mulberry Door at Forbestown, Burgos Circle, where a more than reasonable Valentine's Day repast has been carefully prepared. And if you still haven't heard about, or gone to this haven for luxe comfort food, then it will be a treat ordering a la carte and experiencing for the first time, their Prawns with Crab Fat Pasta dish - this one is the bomb.

Sofitel LeSpa’s Harmonie Room

Remember how I mentioned 'tranquil' earlier on? For something different, treat yourselves to the Aruga 90-minute Massage at Sofitel's LeSpa. As a couple, you can book the Harmonie room so that togetherness remains a constant while you're transported to an Hour and a half of soothing, heavenly bliss. As V-Day falls on a working Wednesday, this is one way to first slough off all the tension and stress. Just don't blame me if deep sleep follows - there's always early the next morning for 'fireworks', right?

However you choose to spend Valentine's Day; keep in mind this is an 'Us' day, so make certain your loved one feels loved.... all throughout the year.
