‘Renoir,’ produced by Sylvia Sanchez, Alemberg Ang, gets standing ovation at Cannes

<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1747614135587image3.jpeg" class="fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:633px"/></div><div><br/></div><p>&quot;Renoir,&quot; a Japanese film produced by Filipina actress Sylvia Sanchez and Filipino producer Alemberg Ang, received a standing ovation at the 78th Cannes Film Festival.</p><p>Sanchez was seen wearing a black terno, accompanied by her husband, Filipino businessman Art Atayde, while Ang was seen carrying Pinoy pride in his &quot;barong.&quot;</p><p>Both Filipino co-producers of the aforementioned Japanese film have previously worked together in the film &quot;Moonglow.&quot;</p><p>“Sobra akong kinilig nung nakita ko ang pangalan ko sa upuan,” Ang wrote after seeing his name written on the chair at Cannes.</p><p>Before going to Cannes, Sanchez said she was &quot;still in disbelief and absolutely ecstatic that ‘Renoir’ (directed by Chie Hayakawa, and co-produced with Eiko Mizuno Gray and Jason Gray, Christophe Bruncher, Yulia Evina Bhara, and Alemberg Ang) was selected as part of the 2025 Cannes competition slate.&quot;</p><p>The movie is a collaboration between Japan’s Happinet Studios, France’s Ici et Là Productions, Singapore’s Akanga Film Asia, Indonesia’s Kawan Kawan Media, and the Philippines’ Daluyong Studio and Nathan Studios.</p><div><br/></div><div><br/></div><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1747614164047image2 (2).jpeg" class="fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:633px"/></div><p>The film &quot;Renoir,&quot; directed by Chie Hayakawa, is a meditation on a pivotal summer in the life of 11-year-old Fuki (a stunning performance by newcomer Yui Suzuki) as she navigates her father&#x27;s cancer battle, her mother&#x27;s worry, and her chronic loneliness. </p><p>Set in suburban Tokyo in 1987, it progresses at a slow pace, with direct, but not harsh, cuts by Anne Klotz, transporting viewers from one scenario to the next.</p><p>The film earned positive reviews from media outlets such as The Hollywood Reporter, The Wrap, Collider, and various French websites.</p><p>The Hollywood Reporter wrote, “Part of the reason ‘Renoir,’ despite its modesty, hits emotionally is because of Suzuki’s compelling performance. The newcomer has a wide-eyed, penetrating stare that at once communicates the reality of Fuki’s innocence and the depth of her curiosity. In the actress’ hands, the character becomes someone you come to feel deeply protective of. When Fuki decides to meet the young man she’s been talking to on the telephone in real life, an anxious tension creeps into ‘Renoir’ as you start to spiral about all the ways that interaction could go wrong.”</p><p>On the other hand, The Wrap, stated, “‘Renoir’ is a coming-of-age story that doesn’t care much about lessons learned or milestones reached.
