<p>Filipiniana has never been static in the hands of<strong>&nbsp;Patis Tesoro</strong>.</p><p>For decades, the designer has approached Filipino dress as something with room to shift, layer and reinvent itself. The <em>terno</em> can become sculptural; heirloom textiles can find new silhouettes; embroidery can move beyond the conventions of formal dress.&nbsp;</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/178900097018419.png" style="width: 960px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"></div><p>Through it all, Tesoro has remained deeply invested in the details that make Filipino fashion distinctly its own. That body of work has now been formally recognized. Maria Beatriz &ldquo;Patis&rdquo; Tesoro has been named a <strong>National Artist of the Philippines for Design</strong>, alongside nine other Filipino artists.</p><p>The honor places a national distinction on a career that has helped shape how <em>Filipiniana</em> is understood and worn today.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/178900098002220.png" style="width: 960px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"></div><p>Tesoro became known for her distinctive interpretations of the terno, baro&rsquo;t saya, and barong Tagalog, but her vocabulary has always been broader than these familiar forms. <em>Pi&ntilde;a</em>, <em>jusi</em>, <em>abaca</em>, cotton and regional textiles have provided the foundation for work defined by intricate embroidery, unusual combinations of texture and a distinctly maximalist appreciation for Filipino craft.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/178900098802521.png" style="width: 960px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"></div><p>Her fascination with textiles has also taken her beyond the fashion atelier. Over the years, she has worked with weavers, embroiderers, dyers and other artisans, developing a close understanding of the processes behind the materials she uses. <em>Pi&ntilde;a</em>, in particular, became an important part of her advocacy. Her visits to Aklan in the 1980s brought her closer to the farmers and weavers responsible for producing the prized pineapple fiber and strengthened her efforts to support the tradition.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/178900099836222.png" style="width: 960px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"></div><p>The same curiosity extended to other regional crafts, from indigenous weaving and natural dyeing to embroidery and traditional fiber work. In Tesoro&rsquo;s practice, the story of a garment begins with the people and processes that produce it. There is also a distinctly archival quality to her work. Old fabrics, vintage clothing, embroidery and leftover materials have frequently been incorporated into new pieces, allowing objects with existing histories to acquire another life.</p><p>This sensibility is central to Tesoro&rsquo;s idea of <em>Filipiniana</em>. Her philosophy is summed up by a phrase that has become closely associated with her work: &ldquo;Filipiniana is forever.&rdquo; It is also the title of a book chronicling more than five decades of her career.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/178900100744424.png" style="width: 960px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"></div><p>Today, her San Pablo, Laguna home and atelier continue to function as a space for design, craft and mentorship, extending her work beyond her own collections and into the next generation of makers.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/178900101730423.png" style="width: 960px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"></div><p>The National Artist recognition arrives as Filipino fashion continues to look toward its own heritage for inspiration. In Tesoro&rsquo;s case, that conversation has been ongoing for decades. Her legacy can be seen in the continued appreciation of Filipino textiles, the renewed interest in traditional dress and the understanding that contemporary Filipino fashion can look forward without abandoning where it came from.</p><p>Tesoro now joins Nicanor G. Tiongson, Gregorio C. Brillantes, Imelda Cajipe-Endaya, Nunelucio M. Alvarado, Gabriel Formoso, Rafael &ldquo;Nonoy&rdquo; Froilan, Armando &ldquo;Bing&rdquo; Lao, Teodoro &ldquo;Teddy&rdquo; Hilado and Alfredo S. Buenaventura as the 10 new National Artists recognized in 2026.
