Layering Casual Pieces For The Holidays, According To Stylist Liz Uy and Girl Boss Roxanne Farillas

Score expert fashion tips just in time for the Holidays!

Aside from exchanging presents, reuniting with old friends and new, and eating all the holiday ham sans the guilt, one of the best things about spending Christmas in the Philippines is that we can finally layer on multiple pieces, thanks to the rare cool climate. (We're sure fashion girls can attest to this, too.)

Metro ladies, it’s high time to make the most out of the holidays by brushing up on your layering skills. We consulted with celebrity fashion stylist Liz Uy and Plains & Prints founder Roxanne Ang-Farillas on practical tips on how to elevate your layering game this season!

  1. A tube dress will get you places!

“My style tip for the holidays? Well, it’s getting colder these days, so I’ve been doing a lot of layering,”  quips Liz. “My favorite [formula] is wearing a tube dress with a cardigan, or layering it over a white shirt and then putting on sneakers.”

2. Play with shapes and proportions

Another unconventional but practical layering tip is sporting an asymmetrical dress together with wide-legged pants. Not only do the silhouettes add story and dimension to the overall look, but they also make for an interesting ensemble worth the double take. One way you can pull off this chic, ultra modern outfit is by donning a no-fail, neutral color palette.

3. Bring your most festive shoes out from the rack!

Christmas is the perfect excuse to be all-out merry—and if that means slipping into your most show-stopping ensemble, then we're here for it. We love how Liz layered a vintage-inspired A-line dress over a sleeved PVC top, creating a fusion of classic and contemporary. Of course, she topped off her look with bright red, knee-high boots,  no less!

4. Jumpsuits are a girl boss's best friend

"I love wearing jumpsuits for the holidays," shares Roxanne. "When layered right, these 'simple' pieces turn out to look luxurious. [My tip is to invest in] black, white, and red jumpsuits, which you can layer with vests, tops, and even skirts."

Check out how Roxanne styled her look with a mesh skirt, transforming her little black jumpsuit from basic to bold!

5. Yes, layering can look sophisticated with the right colors

Here's another Metro style tip worth noting: nail the layering game by going for hues that complement each other. Roxanne works her tailored look by wearing various shades of neutrals: black, beige, nude, and dark green.
