8 Style Lessons From Aerin Lauder
We’ve decoded the impeccable style of the beauty heiress and founder of luxury lifestyle brand Aerin—here’s how to get her look
When I met Aerin Lauder in New York two years ago, one of the first things that caught my eye was how the interiors of her office space mirrored her personal style. She liked having a relaxed atmosphere with curated pieces that don’t call too much attention to themselves. They look as if they belong in the space, being part of the total look. And true enough, Aerin came to the conference table dressed in a white shift dress with volume sleeves and nude heels, exuding understated chic and quiet sophistication.
She is cool and confident in her manner of dress, preferring feminine prints and florals, and keeping to classic silhouettes and a subdued , with her predominantly white blouses paired with eclectic and curated accessories. Timeless, but with a playful twist, Aerin’s style sees her go from gorgeous house parties, to Long Island weekend get-togethers, to chic gala events, and even off to work in her office in the Fulton building.
It was her friend, Michael Kors, who captured her perfectly in Aerin’s Harpers Bazaar profile: “Aerin continues the legacy of stylish American women like C.Z. Guest and Jackie O., who combine the idea of simplicity and luxury with an eye toward quality and timelessness.”
The key to her look is the “sense of ease”—that nonchalance that makes it look as if she doesn’t put on too much effort into her wardrobe. That the curation isn’t so obvious.
Here are our favorite style lessons from Aerin:
1. Florals are a great way to bring femininity to your look.
We love how Aerin likes all types of florals, from winter florals to romantic florals, to bold and dramatic florals and everything in between. She likes the maxi-style in different silhouettes but she keeps it casual by letting her hair in an easy style. Her favorites include pieces from designers such as Johanna Ortiz, Catherine Prevost, Saloni, Borgodenor, along with Valentino and Dolce & Gabbana.

2. It’s all about the accessories.
“I love accessories, I think you should have a great pair of sunglasses, bags, and shoes,” she shares with me during our interview. “I like fashion but I like simple fashion, I love complementing it with accessories, like this pair of bonbon earrings in our store and I think they are magic, they’re not expensive, they’re easy to wear, and fun. I can completely transform looks. I think accessories are pretty amazing.”

3. Blazers upgrade looks instantly, and can be worn even with gowns.
“I love blazers, Stella McCartney has done an amazing job in creating this point of view. I travel in blazers, I travel with them, I wear them with jeans, I wear them at night on my shoulder with a long dress. Blazers are an essential piece,” she says. She has mastered this look of elegance, like how she wore a white blazer over her long black gown for Ralph Lauren’s 50th year celebration.

4. Gold is a neutral.
Taking off from inspiration from her grandmother, Estee Lauder, she always finds pieces in gold that resonate with her—but she likes this instead in her accessories.

5. When in doubt, go black or white.
“My personal style is feminine, effortless, you can say, consistent. I definitely wear black and white and patterns,” she says. We zoom in on the fact that she likes wearing all black or all white—this monochromatic look that is easy to replicate for every body type. This is a great “work” look but it is also a great vacation look, that looks easygoing yet still dressy because of the textures.

6. Bold prints or patterns in your favorite silhouettes give more personality to the look but still keeps it consistent. How do you dress for outdoor OOTDs? Bold prints and florals that take some inspiration from your surroundings—that’s something I learned from Aerin who has mastered this look. Whether she’s at the Parthenon, or in a weekend escapade, she knows how to make an impact.

7. Find inspiration from your surroundings, and get create the look.
Aerin is an expert in lifestyle curation, so it’s only natural that she can link nature with scents, interiors with fashion pieces, and vice versa. We see her do this when she posed in Estee’s favorite room, or when she worked on her Aegea Blossom campaign, wearing a blue Giambattista Valli long dress.

8. A great pair of jeans is everything. For work, or play, and everything in between, a good pair of jeans can give you effortless elegance. We love how she likes cigarette pants with a little flare for that put-together look. “It’s important that you’re comfortable with what you’re wearing,” she says.
