Amina Aranaz-Alunan wears many hats. From managing a life as the co-founder of School of Fashion and the Arts and current President of the Fashion Design Council of the Philippines to managing her own bag brand, Aranáz, looking as stylish as she does on the daily almost seemed impossible. But how does she do it so seamlessly? 

Amina’s first memories of fashion was as a little girl, getting dolled up by her mom, who also served as her very first style mentor. Like mother, like daughter, she could’ve gotten her natural hand at bag making through her mom, too, who also has a bag factory.  “I was her doll,” Amina says on remembering her sartorial yesteryears. These very formative years ripened her to become the non-conformist that she is while of course sticking to a look that’s statement-making but approachable.

“Very feminine,” Amina says so surely when asked about her personal style. But it is the kind that has that special spark to it—say, a handmade aspect to the piece or details that took time and expertise to create. It is the craftswoman in her that gives premium to the details we often overlook in an item of clothing, and frankly, what makes her handbag brand a hit. 

Purchasing pieces for Amina isn’t just about hype or that it looks good—it has to last long. “It’s really a matter of choosing pieces for your wardrobe that are more meaningful to you,” she shares a secret on how to not over-clutter your closet. “[Choose pieces] you know you will keep for a long time.”

And before we even get to getting those pieces that spark meaning, look introspectively first. Start by being having an open mind. “Have a certain level of acceptance and self-awareness,” Amina says, pushing everyone to try out looks and pieces that we’d be surprised to know would fit us. And that’s how to start having that style that gives you mileage for life.
