Onitsuka Tiger’s 2019 Spring / Summer Collection Is A Perfect Mix Of Sports And Fashion
As one of the most successful and one of the oldest shoe companies in Japan, it’s no surprise Onitsuka Tiger has a colorful history to match its equally interesting footwear. Even after almost seven decades , Onitsuka Tiger has managed to set itself apart with its constantly evolving and growing brand worldwide.
Last October, the Onitsuka Tiger 2019 Spring Summer Collection was officially launched at the Okuma auditorium of Waseda University as part of Amazon Fashion Week TOKYO which is one of the world’s top five fashion shows and was attended by approximately a thousand guests, including TV personality Naomi Watanabe, AKB48's Haruna Kojima, and international celebrities and media representatives and leaders in the fashion industry from America, Europe, as well as Asia. Local celebrities Fiona Xie and Xu Bin were also amongst the night's A-list attendees.
During the SS19 launch, the Okuma Auditorium, was set up with an extensive theatrical stage, and the entire surfaces of the walls and stage floor were lined with mirrors to create a “multidimensional” space. The collection’s theme of diversity was expressed by juxtaposing the classical look of the auditorium, which is designated an “important cultural property” of Japan, with a futuristic feel evoked by the mirrors.
The new ‘Onitsuka Tiger 2019 Spring/Summer Global Collection” was created under the guidance of designer and brand creative director Andrea Pompilio. The new collection is a perfect merge of the sportswear spirit of Onitsuka Tiger and the international style of Andrea Pompilio. Designed with the concept “Summer of Love,” the collection was developed by mixing and mashing a variety of elements. It expressed, through combinations of materials, prints and graphics, a multicultural, borderless and genderless global society where people hold a diversity of world views and celebrate different forms of love.
Onitsuka Tiger designer Andrea Pompilo was born in Italy in 1973. His father was an architect, his mother a painter, and his grandmother ran a fashion boutique. Influenced by this unique environment, he dreamed of becoming a fashion designer from a young age. After studying fashion at an arts university in Pesaro and the prestigious Istituto Marangoni in Milan, and gathering experience working for famous brands, he unveiled his own signature brand in the 2011 Autumn Winter season. At Pitti Uomo in January 2013, he also launched the collaboration brand “Onitsuka Tiger × Andrea Pompilio.”
