Pepito Albert paved the way for many of the country’s designers. The veteran Filipino designer was particularly known for his clean lines, subtle drapery, precise construction, and rich fabrics. Pepito used to say that “Proportion and silhouette must be correct. Details come in later.” For the Filipino touch, Pepito favors crepe, chiffon, inabel, and many indigenous and handwoven patterns.

Though the years, Pepito has become the go-to designer of the most stylish politicians, celebrities, and his muses. From his custom looks for Irene Araneta, Maricris Zobel’s terno for the Le Bals de Débutantes in 2009, to Korina Sanchez’s embroidered piña fabric gown for her wedding, the women who wear Pepito’s clothes ooze with class.

As for his menswear creations, Pepito made headlines for the barongs he made for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s inauguration in June 2022.

More recently, we saw the last moments of Pepito during the Algodon fashion show at the Pintô Art Museum in February 2023. Donning his creation was Filipino supermodel Jo Ann Bitagcol. The two-piece gray ensemble featured oversized sleeves and a black ball skirt.

The fashion industry is mourning the lost of a luminary. Albert’s creations for Metro’s covers will be forever remembered. Rest In Peace, Pepito.
