Plains & Prints Collaborates With Local Designer Mark Bumgarner In A Collection Featuring The Queen Of Philippine Flowers

Once again, proudly local RTW brand Plains & Prints wows in a collaboration with another world-class Filipino designer: Former race car driver and now designer-to-the-stars Mark Bumgarner.

“The retail industry is very competitive, so we want to keep our clients interested through collaborations like this,” shares Roxanne Ang-Farillas, the founder and boss woman behind Plains & Prints. Since 2008, the brand has worked with esteemed local designers to promote Filipino talent, with Vania Romoff, Rhett Eala, Rajo Laurel, Randy Ortiz, and Amina Aranaz on the roster.

“We were very excited to work with Mark because he has a very strong following and his design aesthetic is very similar to ours,” adds Roxanne, indicating that their partnership with the sports and fashion enthusiast took one year to finally materialize.

True to the retail brand’s name, Mark Bumgarner’s 13-piece capsule collection features both plains, and yes, prints. For the latter, he chose two Philippine endemic flowers as inspiration: the Waling-Waling, also known as “The Queen of  Philippine Flowers” and one of the most prized orchids in the world, and the Anahaw, the Philippine national leaf.

In an exclusive interview with Metro.Style, Mark Bumgarner shares his inspiration behind his latest collection. Keep scrolling!

Metro.Style: Describe your aesthetic as a designer.

Mark Bumgarner: Timeless, modern,and feminine.

MS: Tell us more about your collection.

MB: The collection I made for Plains & Prints was inspired by the Waling-Waling orchid and the Anahaw leaf. I wanted to keep it very Filipino since Plains & Prints is a local brand and I’m also a local designer. We integrated the prints in the patterns of the clothes. For the plains, I made sure to create go-to pieces from day to evening wear. There are a lot of pieces you can mix and match in different colorways.

MS: How were you approached by Plains & Prints?

MB: I was invited through an anonymous e-mail. I only figured that it was Plains & Prints when we first met. Once I saw them, I said ‘yes’ right away!

MS: How was it like working with the brand?

MB: It was super fun! They were super easy to work with—they approved everything right away! It was a long process—it took more than seven months so I got close to everyone.

MS: What is your favorite piece in the collection?

MB: If I were to choose favorites, it’s the corseted top with the drape at the side. If you look at the print closely, it looks like the Waling-Waling orchid! I also like the long dress version—it’s my favorite print from the whole collection!
