EXCLUSIVE: 'Angel Baby' Is A Fashion Goldmine! See The Gibbs Sisters' Looks In Their Music Video
The Gibbs sisters stylishly take over heaven, the in-between, and hell in their newest music video
Chi and Gabs Gibbs have long incorporated high-shine nostalgic glamour in real life through their stylish online presence on Instagram. These girls eat pop culture and color extravaganza for breakfast and we're all here for it! Inspired by the groovy eras of the '60s and '70s and the hyper-rebellious outfits of the '80s and '90s, Chi and Gabs know how to mishmash various style inspirations and make it their own. And even with the latest trends, best believe that these girls are spot on.
With the GIBBS, the visuals are not the only ones on point, their brand of music is in tune with the times as well. And since their debut single "No Hearts," which was released in September 2019 and featured in two Korean shows last year, we've all been waiting for a second bop to obsess over from this talented duo. Lo and behold, they're giving us a fashion goldmine and more with "Angel Baby."
When asked what the song is about, Chi says, "It's a heroine story about finding your inner demons, whether it be yourself or someone you wanna cut out of your life."
Right off the bat, you can tell that the music video is adorned with stylish interpretations of heaven, the in-between, and hell. With subtle motifs of '90s and early 2000s fashion spread all throughout the music video, Chi and Gabs' ensembles are otherworldly. There are textures and shapes, as well as the wild use of pastels and the color red, to justify the separation between heaven and hell. To give credit where credit's due, we spoke to fashion stylist Jana Silao to further explain the music video's swoon-worthy fashion moments.
In our exclusive interview, Jana mentions in detail the styling direction she took to give the music video's narrative the oomph it deserves. "When Chi and Gabs asked me to style their music video, they already had a very concrete idea of the styling they want to go for. Upon seeing their initial mood board, I was immediately reminded of the works of Canadian photographer Petra Collins and British-born photographer and filmmaker Nadia Lee Cohen," says Jana.
Dream-like, effervescent, and nostalgic—these were the exact styling themes that reigned supreme all throughout the music video. Jana made sure that the juxtaposition between heaven and hell is apparent through the use of latex and sheer in the ensembles.
For the heaven-themed looks, Jana went for pastel retro-futuristic silhouettes that remind her of the Spring/Summer collections of Anna Sui. This includes the zinging colors of purple and blue used to resemble the lightning and thunder that had an apparent presence in the music video.
To strike a balance between heaven and hell, Chi and Gabs were dressed in Courtney Love-esque ensembles that oozed with grunge and '90s punk rock. As an interesting fact, Jana tells Metro.Style, "The sheer dress that Gabs wore is actually her mother's dress from the '90s. The arm warmers was a last-minute idea by Gabs and it totally pulled the whole look together. As for Chi, she wore a black corset and a pair of leather pants. We added a pair of dragon-shaped specs to give the look the right amount of oomph."
To tie up the whole concept, Jana went for red monochromatic looks for both sisters in the location that was supposedly meant to depict a high-fashion hell. The fiery styling and spot-on devil impact was truly note-worthy.
Produced by moophs under the hip label Tarsier Records, "Angel Baby" is such a masterpiece that was born amid a pandemic. Watch "Angel Baby" here and check out the gallery down below to see all of the looks the Gibbs sisters wore in the music video:
