A Sneak Peek At Michael Cinco's Swan Lake-Themed Couture Collection For Ballet Philippines' 50th Anniversary Gala

Ballet Philippines (BP) is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Over the years, the dance company has had incredible and indelible contribution to the local dance culture and industry; it has developed over 500 choreographic shows with an impressive mix of Asian, Western, indigenous, classical, and contemporary styles and genres, of full-length classical ballets, internationally recognized masterworks, and indigenous works inspired by Filipino folklore and social issues.

To celebrate this golden milestone, Ballet Philippines is holding a gala show with "Swan Lake" as its overarching theme. With a feat as remarkable as theirs, this anniversary truly deserves to be marked as an occasion like no other.

The Ballet Philippines 50th Anniversary Gala Fashion Show will take place on September 29 at the Marriott Hotel Grand Ballroom. Recognizing how fashion is key to the overall awe-inspiring impact of a performance, this gala will not only feature dancers doing a new "Swan Lake" ballet-inspired dance by Alden Lugnasin, it will also put the spotlight on models showcasing couture oufits by the one and only Michael Cinco.

Cultural Center of the Philippines President, former BP president, and head chairperson of the anniversary gala Margie Moran met Michael back in 2017 during Vicki Belo and Hayden Kho's wedding in Paris. That's when the idea of combining fashion and dance in a one-of-a-kind collaboration came about. "I was thinking of 'Swan Lake' and so was he," Margie says about how the concept was identified. With BP being a proudly Filipino dance company that's making waves internationally, it just made sense to partner with an equally distinguished and global Pinoy designer like Michael.

Of this "Swan Lake"-themed couture collection, Michael shares, "I'm truly honored to present a 50-piece collection for the 50th anniversary of Ballet Philippines. When I was approached by Miss Universe Margie Moran, she asked me to do a show for Ballet Philippines, immediately, I had the idea that my inspiration is 'Swan Lake.' I think it's one of the most beautiful ballets I've ever seen. I watched it 15 years ago in New York. The collection will be brought from Dubai to the Philippines, and I'm very proud that it's all made by Filipinos in Dubai."

"When I first saw Michael's designs, I thought, 'Oh, to be young and skinny again!' I was really floored, because when you see them close up, it's really perfection," exclaims Ballet Philippines Artistic Director and National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes.

When it comes to Michael and his "impalpable" creations, people can always expect the best. His attention to detail is unparalleled. The intricacy of each and every Cinco masterpiece is beautiful beyond words.

“We wanted something visual to inspire awe for both BP and Michael Cinco. Like many of our dancers and choreographers, he is someone who is representative of the Filipino culture and has made his mark in the international scene,” Margie points out. “I don’t think something like this has been done before, at least on the scale with which Ballet Philippines is doing it. Given the inspiration, it will definitely be dramatic, glamorous, theatrical, and fantastic.”
