Designer Michael Leyva Wows Russians With New Collection

Imagine our excitement when we saw this teaser on our very own Metrowear designer Michael Leyva's Instagram just a couple of days ago:

Michael did it again! A showcase of beautiful gowns and dresses was presented on the runway of no less than the Al Arabia Fashion Days in Moscow, Russia just recently, and we couldn't be more proud!

It's no secret that Michael is one of this generation's most celebrated young designers, with his creations often worn by local A-listers both in the showbiz world and beyond. We've seen the likes of Anne Curtis, Jinkee Pacquiao, Charo Santos-Concio, and Bea Alonzo donning his creations to some of the biggest and brightest red carpet events in Manila, but the young designers is ready to do more, create more, design more, and achieve greater heights in the months and years to come.

"God is good", Michael shares in an interview I did with him recently, and we just couldn't agree more, as such beauty being shared with the world can only be deemed a God-given gift. Michael, soft in his words and ever easy to approach, has conquered yet another milestone in his career: to do another international fashion show, this time featuring his Spring/Summer 2020 collection, in a new city—Moscow, Russia!

He says he was invited by the organizers of Al Arabia Fashion Week and the Arab Fashion Council to join, so without hesitation, he said yes, as it has always been his brand's direction to reach an even wider audience and show, and sell internationally.

When you think of Moscow, you cannot not think of the picturesque St. Basil's Cathedral, the one with the multi-colored facade, as if screaming to get photographed. Michael shares that it is also known as the Cathedral of the Protection of the Mother of God, and it being the symbol per se of feminine energy manifested in an explosion of shapes and colors.

Michael was indeed inspired by all this beauty and the symbolism behind it, hence creating a collection of 26 ball gowns and dresses fit for Russian royalty—women who love glamorous, grand, detailed pieces. "They always want to feel like princesses", Michael shares. Materials like silk chiffon, Gazar, beaded fabrics with Swarovski crystals and rhinestones were the main materials used to create the breathtaking creations, and by the looks of it, the crowd was left amazed at Filipino talent, yet again!

"As for the sky which I used as the background for the collection and for the stage, colorful roofs can be metaphorically seen as a rainbow touching the sky in the direction of another dimension. This symbolic meaning makes reference to the memory of my brother (the late designer Brian Leyva), bridging personal memories with my Spring/Summer 2020 collection—the love and loss of a human being mixed with romantic and nostalgic view of femininity, bathed in memories able to touch the sky." - Michael Leyva

It is honestly pretty easy to imagine walking into a Michael Leyva atelier abroad, as his creations no doubt appeal to a wide range of women all over the world, so we asked Michael if he has any plans of doing so in the coming years. He cheerily quips "After the show, I got invitations from some of the organizers and clothing lines here to put up a boutique here in Russia and carry my brand." He neither said yes or no, but by the looks of it, anything's possible in Michael's world.

He even adds, "I'm excited to be showcasing in another big fashion destination again soon. I want to show the world that #michaelleyvalearnstorocktheworld"—his official hashtag for the exciting adventures he has been going through in his career.

With all this in mind, we share in Michael's enthusiasm and motivation to reach even greater heights. And since it's the month to celebrate Philippine Independence, we'd say he is off to a great start when it comes to promoting Filipino flair all over the world. Congratulations on all the achievements, Michael, with love from your Metro family!

Michael thanks his Filipino team who helped conceptualize and curate the show, especially Director Robby Carmona and stylist Reynaldo Santos, Jr.
