“It’s Her Color”: Michael Leyva Shares The Details About Kris Aquino’s Dress in ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ World Premiere
What are the perks of being Kris Aquino’s go-to designer? Getting to dress her for the ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ global premiere! That’s exactly what Filipino designer, and Metrowear talent, Michael Leyva got to experience as he joined Kris Aquino and her son, Bimby, to the glamorous red carpet event.
Although ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ features a groundbreaking all-Asian cast, Kris isn’t one to miss a chance to promote Philippines. Michael Leyva specifically designed this piece for that, “I wanted to give tribute to our Filipino ‘Maria Clara’ [dress]”, he remarks. “That’s why I made the modern ‘Maria Clara’ for her.”

Michael explains that the dress doesn’t really play much into her character as the Malay Princess Intan in the movie. But the color does bear significance to her family. “[Yellow] is her color, and a tribute to her mom and dad. She is perfect in it.” Earlier that day, Kris herself also showed a gown she intended to wear by another Filipino designer, Francis Libiran; the gown was also a golden yellow, showing her intent in representing her family.
“It’s a great honor and privilege to showcase Filipino talent in Hollywood!”, shares Michael, who has always had a goal to make it big on the international red carpets. “It’s a dream come true for me, seeing [the ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ premiere]. And being able to witness it personally made it more exciting.”
