<p>Sometimes it feels like the Philippines has become its own Dickensian Christmas story—except instead of<em> A Tale of Two Cities</em>, we’re living <em>A Tale of Two Christmases</em>: one of excess, one of austerity. Two realities at opposite ends of the spectrum. In one, the well-heeled toast champagne over multi-course dinners; in the other, families count every peso just to put food on the table.</p><p>And honestly, if Dickens himself had been dropped into this situation in Manila, even he might have thrown his hands up and said, “Surely this is satire.”</p><p>I’m talking about the <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/11/28/dti-says-p500-basic-noche-buena-budget-depends-on-family-size-1653" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Department of Trade and Industry’s recent pronouncement that ₱500 is enough for a Noche Buena for a family of four</a>. At <a href="https://metro.style/food/2025/10/30/helm-gets-two-michelin-stars-a-first-for-the-ph-1910" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">newly-awarded MICHELIN-starred restaurants in Manila</a>, even the most accessible mains start around ₱650, while tasting menus across the city range from ₱4,000 to as high as ₱8,800 per person—before taxes, service charge, and certainly before you even think about ordering from the wine list. In other words: a single dinner for one can easily cost more than what many Filipino families spend on food in an entire week.</p><p>We’re clearly living in two different worlds. In one, a diner casually drops ₱5,000 on a single dinner before moving on to dessert and drinks. Meanwhile, just a few streets away, a family survives on instant noodles, counting themselves lucky to have even that much. Its cognitive dissonance made flesh: opulence and austerity normalized side by side. Funny, if it weren’t so tragically real.</p><p>Of course, on social media—our national town square, circus, and confessional—the ₱500 pronouncement ricocheted through feeds in outrage, disbelief, and memes. A DIY pandesal buffet—a Pinoy grazing table. “I discovered the wonders of Genesis pandesal in Marikina, which sells ₱2 per mini pandesal. This is a great vehicle for our feast—50 pieces is just ₱100,” Bugia said. “The palamans can be a mix of cheeses (don’t sleep on Eden, ₱56.50 for 160g), jams (Clara Olé, ₱168 for 320g), liver spread (Reno, ₱55.50 for 230g), and sliced ham (CDO Classic Sweet Ham, ₱101 for 250g)—all up, ₱480. It’s not grand, but it’s fun, perfect for sharing, and still a nice way of celebrating.”</p><div><br/></div><h3><strong>Dino Datu: The Potluck Philosopher</strong></h3><p>Dino Datu of Ted’s Kitchen in Laguna—chef, restaurateur, and former <em>Cook Magazine</em> editor-in-chief—was blunt. “Noche Buena is arguably the most important celebratory meal of the year. It involves the entire family. It’s special,” he said. So when he heard the DTI’s claim that ₱500 is enough for four people, he was disgusted. “How could they claim that without trampling on people’s dignity? But the sad reality is, some families have even less. For those merely surviving, ₱500 might cover a couple of meals—or maybe a whole day.”</p><p>His workaround is a joint noche buena, organized potluck-style. “One family brings pasta, another lechon manok, someone makes macaroni or fruit salad, two families share the cost of a decent ham, and so on,” Datu suggested. “Volume cooking brings the cost down, and dividing the labor gives everyone more time to actually enjoy the holidays. It’s the only way a meager budget can stretch to dishes worth celebrating. And aside from having more—and hopefully better—food, it’s a chance to reunite and make a proper party of it.”</p><p>Of course, this only underscores the great divide: how some of us get to feast like kings, while the rest have to keep being resilient. <em>Pagod na kami maging</em> resilient.</p><div><br/></div><h3><strong>Giney Villar: Empathy with Conviction</strong></h3><p>For Giney Villar, who has spent years working with disenfranchised and underserved communities, the reality is clear: for countless Filipinos, ₱500—or even less—has long been the norm. “I want to honor the hard work behind scraping together that ₱500. For those with more, it may be the cost of a single shirt sleeve. But for many, it represents days of sacrifice, careful saving, and quiet determination to make noche buena possible,” she said. </p><p>Yet she is also incensed by the callousness behind the flippant remark—“especially when set against the backdrop of thieving and deceitful officials who siphoned public funds that should have strengthened social services, eased the burdens of housing, transport, and healthcare, and, in some tragic cases, even prevented the loss of life and limb.”</p><p>“This doesn’t mean we should shrug and accept it. We must continue demanding government support and infrastructure that allow people to dream bigger and live with dignity. But we also need to temper our outrage with empathy. ₱500 may seem tiny to the middle class, yet for many families, it’s a hard-won sum—proof that even the smallest celebrations are earned, and that sometimes, a little ingenuity goes a long way.”</p><div><br/></div><h3><strong>Tatung Sarthou: Humor as Compass</strong></h3><p>Finally, there was Chef Tatung—who approaches everything with a wry sense of humor and a down-to-earth sensibility. “If all I had was ₱500, I’d let go of the Christmas hang-up,” he said. “Why force a feast you can’t afford? I’d rather cook a good pot of adobo, be full, and be grateful. Better one honest, satisfying meal than a sad table of stretched-out dishes.”</p><p>And he didn’t stop there. “Maybe this is a reminder to vote wisely next time,” he added. “Food on the table is a political issue. We shouldn’t have to survive Christmas—we should be able to celebrate it.”</p><div><br/></div><h3><strong>Two Christmases, One Country</strong></h3><p>In the end, this isn’t really about whether ₱500 can fund a proper noche buena. It’s about the callous assumption that ordinary Filipinos don’t deserve more than to struggle and sacrifice, even as others wallow in luxury. We live in one country divided by two realities, where two Christmases exist side by side: one is abundant, the other austere. Until Filipinos stop accepting two Christmases in one country, no amount of resilience will ever fix this nation.</p>
