Don Papa Rum Unveils Four Dreamy Cocktails That Taste Like Spring
The brand’s evocative new spring campaign makes us think of new beginnings and the promise of better days ahead
Spring brings fresh flowers, newborn grass, and the bright promise of new beginnings. And while it’s not a familiar experience for many Filipinos, the concepts it embodies will certainly resonate with us. “Spring is all about the idea of rebirth and looking forward to better things ahead,” explains Monica Llamas Garcia, Director of Communications for Don Papa Rum, as she unveiled the company’s new spring campaign called “Sweet Sugarlandia Spring.”
But why spring, you might wonder, as we endure one of Manila’s scorching summers. Ms Garcia explains that Don Papa Rum, which launched in 2012 as a small local brand, now has a presence in 30 countries all over the world, reaching Europe, North America and Africa. Their campaigns are designed for a global audience and embraces the seasons of the entire world. The spring campaign is part of a series and follows the winter campaign launched last December. We can look forward to more seasonal campaigns later this year.
Sweet Sugarlandia Spring gets the mood from whimsical, languid scenes shot in stylish Dawnridge House, the legendary Beverly Hills home featured in Netflix’s 2020 hit show Ratched. Built in 1949 by designer Tony Duquette, Drawnridge is one of the most creatively designed private homes in the U.S.. It was later bought by Hutton Wilkinson, who was once Duquette’s apprentice, and has since served as the backdrop for many movies and shows.
It’s a place where romantic picnics last from noon to night; where cocktails are sipped on terraces bathed in the golden rays of evening sunshine, and where intimate groups of friends revel in laughing and being together once again. Bringing these scenes to life is renowned photographer Steve Tirona, whose works have been exhibited across the world from Japan, Malaysia, Australia, The Netherlands, USA, and has a permanent collection exhibited at The Singapore Art Museum.
And naturally, there are new cocktails inspired by spring. These four new drinks are created by Tomas Delos Reyes, Don Papa’s LA-based US brand ambassador.
Designed to signal "the first signs of summer," you can make this cocktail at home.
In a cocktail shaker, add Don Papa Rum, lemon juice, hibiscus syrup and mole bitters. Add ice and shake. Strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with an edible flower.
Shake off the blues with this cocktail inspired by the Don’s travels to the cool Pacific coast.
In a cocktail shaker, add Don Papa Rum, pineapple juice, lime juice, velvet falernum, Ube syrup* and fill with ice. Shake and strain into highball glass over ice. Garnish with a Pineapple wedge and straw.
A celebration of the first blossoms of the season and the promise of longer, warmer days ahead.
In a cocktail shaker, add Don Papa Rum, sake, lime juice, simple syrup, and ice. Shake and strain into a cocktail glass with half a cup of ice. Spear and garnish with the remaining melon sphere.
In a cocktail shaker, add Don Papa Rum, guava nectar, pandan simple syrup, lime juice, peychauds bitter, and ice. Shake and strain into a rocks glass over ice. Top with ginger ale and garnish with a lime wheel.
To complete the spring feeling, Don Papa also collaborated with 2012 Palanca Award winner Anca Bautista in creating an original poem to anchor the campaign.
The Sweetest Spell of Spring
At the close of cold, trapped winter, open wide the door,
Greet the brilliant promise of a day with much in store.
The golden rays of sunshine, spilling languid and alight;
A fine, romantic picnic to last from noon to night;
Bewitching strains of music, bright whimsy in the air,
A spread of cool elixirs poured out for friends to share;
Laughter from the gardens, games across the lawns,
The dreamy scent of flowers as the veil of dusk is drawn.
And now, you dreamers, waken; come drink, and dance, and sing!
The dream you have been dreaming is the sweetest spell of Spring
